  • Memphis and head coach Penny Hardaway charged with multiple violations

Memphis and Penny Hardaway have received a Notice of Allegations from the NCAA outlining multiple Level I and Level II violations in their basketball program. Several involve the recruitment of James Wiseman, a player who played for Hardaway at Memphis East High School,, before Hardaway took the Memphis head coaching job and Wiseman followed him there. The NCAA ruled Wiseman ineligible while they investigated a question of illegal payments, but Hardaway played Wiseman anyway, and there was a restraining order filed against the NCAA.
And there is evidence of failure to cooperate and lack of institutional control outlined in this article- some of the Memphis coaches cellphones and computers had information erased to allegedly hide wrongdoing from the NCAA's investigation.
