I’m not implying that Terry doesn’t value the other stuff or that you shouldn’t enjoy the recruiting process if you’ve earned it. You can still enjoy the wedding and have a nice day, while keeping the value on the lifetime commitment. But I think as a general trend we seem to be missing the forest for the trees more often than not as a society and misplacing where the value should be.

A person is now a brand. Anything and everything they do is viewed through the lens of how that brand is affected. What are we doing, from their perspective, to increase their brand? I don't know about you guys but when I went to school almost no one I knew could name a single player on the basketball team. Let alone knew when the team was playing. At least not until our sweet 16 run. Have we made it past the first round of the NCAA recently? What has the MVC been doing to help increase their brand?
Because that is very much what they are thinking about and probably one of the many reasons why the transfer portal is so popular.
If we want to lessen the impact of the transfer portal I think the conference as a whole needs to start thinking more about how to add value beyond a free scholarship. The first thing our conference needs to do is increase its accessibility. Its hard to compete with the big schools because they get major TV time and all kinds of eyeballs. Meanwhile when I want to watch a Bradley game I have to spend 10 minutes furiously Googling what channel our game is on, if any. And even when I find it, I have no idea if I have access to it.
Does this help our brand? Does this help their brand? I don't think so. Creighton, WS, and Loyola didn't think so. I think the first thing the MVC needs to do is rethink how it broadcasts games. Traditional TV is dead, and streaming reigns supreme. The MVC needs to make every school and every game freely available on its own app. The app needs to be available on Apple/Google/Roku/PC/mobile browser. Games should be replayable. Each player should have their highlights available from each game. Statistics should be available right alongside the game if you want. And there should be multiple audio sources to choose from. Want to watch the game with the radio announcers instead? Or maybe just the game with crowd noise? Offer the game in 4K.
All of this is fairly easy to do, because in some way shape or form we already do it.
If we want to adjust to this new reality we need to start offering value to players above the other schools. Business as usual doesn't seem to work in the era of the transfer portal.
Or don't. Stick to business as usual.

A bit of a surprising decision by Terry. Georgia will be rebuilding from terrible year in 2021-22. They were 6-26 overall, and 1-17 in the SEC. That is their worst season since WW2. They fired head coach Tom Crean and hired Mike White away from Florida. They only have 4 players returning next season, though they include their top 3 scorers. One of the returning players is last season's top scorer, Kario Oquendo, who was a teammate of Terry's at Florida Southwestern College 2 seasons ago.
In addition to Terry, they have gotten only 2 other commitments, so far. One from Justin Hill, a 6'0" point guard transfer from Longwood who lead the team with a 14.2 ppg average, and one from 6'7" prep school player J.T. Elder, who will be an incoming freshman next season. Both are rated as 2-star recruits.
Georgia will likely be picked near the bottom of the SEC next year. Good luck Terry.
