  • 2022 NIT

Northern Iowa is in the NIT with an auto-bid. Their NET rank is 102.
Drake (NET 83) is a bubble team hoping for an at-large NIT bid.

Wright State just upset #1 seeded Cleveland State in the Horizon League semifinal, which bumps Cleveland State down into the auto-bid in the NIT.
Cleveland State's NET rank is 175, which means they are taking an at-large bid away from a more deserving team, maybe Drake.

Texas State, winner of the Sun Belt, was already upset in the quarterfinal, and the tournament was won by #3 seed Georgia State (NET 168 ).

Wow, conference champion out in the quarterfinals. Don't see that often.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Another quarterfinal upset of conference champ... Iona loses to 9 seed Rider in MAAC. Too bad for Iona, think they weren't too bad... obviously not good enough, though. LOL. Kinda glad Pitino lost.

Wow! And yes, Piraino losing is always a plus!

The MAC regular season champion Toledo was just upset in the MAC Tournament by Akron. That bumps Toledo to the NIT, and eliminates another potential NIT at-large bid.

UNI is a 6 seed and they will play at St Louis. Missouri St made it as an 8 seed and they play at 1 seed Oklahoma whose coach will be a familiar face in Porter Moser.

2 other interesting notes related to BU: 21-22 opponent Toldeo is an 8 seed but get to host 1 seed Dayton because of the NCAA play in games that Dayton hosts on the 15th and 16th, which is when the first round of the NIT is played. Future MVC member Belmont is a 5 seed and they possibly have one of the shortest distances to travel for a post season tournament in playoff history as they will have to go about 5 minutes to play at 4 seed Vanderbilt.

Is it bad that I'm more interested in the NIT than the NCAA this year?

I think that Drake should have been selected for the NIT. They finished second in the MVC tournament and had a better rating and better record than several schools that were selected. I know that UNI and Missouri State were selected, but neither of those schools got to the MVC tournament finals.

Reminds me of Berry Hinson along with his Missouri State team who had a far superior RPI than many of the NCAA teams that were invited - I forget what year - But Berry simply stated " What Does It Take to Be Invited ?? " - the NCAA Selection Committee that year "totally blew it".

UNI's NIT bid was an automatic bid because they won the regular season. Their NET was 100, so they would not have gotten an at-large bid.
Missouri State got an NIT bid because their NET was 68, better than Drake's (82). Drake was probably one of the last teams left out of the NIT.

Missouri State getting beaten by Oklahoma in the 1st round of the NIT.
Oklahoma 67 Missouri State 50 with about 12 minutes left in the game-
