Yes, Illinois State's 2nd leading scorer Sy Chatman has entered the transfer portal. My source at ISU says that the general feelings about this are "good riddance".
Chatman has had "issues" wherever he's been. He initially committed to UMass late in the recruiting cycle in 2018. Bradley was among a number of schools interested, but never offered. He averaged 3.7 ppg as a freshman (2018-19) and was being counted on to become a starter for the 2019-20 season at UMass. But he was mysteriously absent for the first couple months of his sophomore season and missed several games. No explanation was ever given, except "leave of absence". He eventually returned to the team and played in 6 games, all of which UMass lost. In his final game with UMass, he was pulled out of the game by the coach for what I've seen described as lackadaisical play. He then left the team again and put his name in the transfer portal in mid-December, 2019.
He sat in the transfer portal from mid-December, 2019 until mid-June, 2020 without an offer. Finally, Dan Muller, desperate for a big man, offered him a scholarship and he committed in mid-June, 2020.
Then in his first year at ISU (2020-21), he missed the first 3 weeks of the season for unknown reasons. But then returned for 5 games at the end of November and December, then opted out for the remainder of the season. He announced he was leaving ISU and placed his name in the transfer portal again in the middle of the season. But after not getting any offers for several months, and with Muller still desperate for big men after Dusan Mahorcic left, Chatman had a change of mind and returned to ISU for this past season. In 2021-22 he played the first 20 games, and averaging 13.5 ppg, and 6.1 rpg. He suffered a season ending ACL injury in their January 23 game at Evansville.
So now he is coming off a serious ACL injury, and enters the transfer portal again. Plus, as someone who has already transferred once, he does not qualify for the immediate eligibility if he does sign somewhere else in D1, since that rule only applies to players who have not previously transferred.

Not unexpected that there is a housecleaning going on in Redbird Arena. Coach Pedon will be putting his stamp on this program like all new coaches do. This is a good thing overall for ISU. All the players going into the portal could not win while at ISU, so what are they really losing? Some good pieces, but prior coaching staff could not get them all on the same page. Coach, just a question....even with his transfers, do the current rules allow immediate playing time if his prior coach left/was fired?

I think Chatman's biggest issue is more likely to be his ACL injury/rehab. He might find few schools willing to risk a scholarship on him because of the injury.

Interesting new player in the transfer portal this afternoon- Antoine Davis, a 6'1" guard from Detroit-Mercy University.
He was the 3rd highest scorer in Division I this past season, averaging 23.9 ppg-
Di scoring stats- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...l/stats/player
He is a senior, and that 23.9 ppg average was actually the lowest season scoring average he's had in his 4 years at Detroit-Mercy
He has finished among the top 4 scorers in the country each of the last 4 seasons with averages of 26.1 ppg as a freshman, 24.3 ppg as a soph, 24.0 ppg as a junior, and 23.9 ppg as a senior.
He gets his points because of the volume of shots he takes. Over his 4 years, he has averaged over 20 shot attempts per game.
Career stats- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba.../antoine-davis
He has one more year of eligibility left for his Covid season.
He has scored 2,734 points in his 4 year career. With another year, he would likely pass Hersey Hawkins (3,008 points) and move into the top couple scorers of all time. If he averaged about the same as he has in the last 4 seasons, he would finish 2nd only to Pete Maravich's all-time career scoring record of 3,667 points.
Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis, whose 2734 points through four seasons (24.6 PPG) ranks 22nd all-time in college basketball history, said that he's entering the transfer portal.
What is odd about the transfer is that his father is Mike Davis (former Indiana and UAB head coach), who is the current head coach at Detroit-Mercy. Antoine Davis has played for his dad the last 4 seasons. And, his older brother, Mike Davis, Jr. is an assistant coach with the team.

Davis should get a fair bit of interest from D1 coaches.

Interesting tweet from an Indiana State assistant coach-

So when you see a transfer or a recruit listing schools that are recruiting or have shown interest, realize it may not always be what it seems.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

He should help replace some of Loyola's player losses.

Yeah Tommy, he was a streak shooter and he killed Bradley in one of the games in his freshman year, 2020-21. In the game at Valpo a little over a year ago (1/28/21), Edwards came off the bench for Valpo and shot 6-11, and 4-8 from three for 18 points in a game that stayed close and Bradley lost in double overtime 91-85.

I think Valpo underutilized him and will be curious to see how Loyola uses him.Larry Bird
