No doubt it was fun to watch Brown, Kennell, and Bar all grow together for four years. It's realistic to ask if we will ever get that kind of group that sticks together for four years again. Real shame they didn't get to see what they could do in the tournament at the end.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Continuity is what makes the mid-majors dangerous, and when you run into a senior laden team that's played together for 4 years, they can give the big boys some real problems. I'm afraid with the rules now, these days may be long gone. I sure hope I'm wrong.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

This is exactly how they envisioned it would work. They are not the least bit concerned about how it is affecting mid-major and smaller schools.
The NCAA did not foresee the fallout from the Covid extra year of eligibility rule. It was not seen so much last year because players who opted for a 5th year did not count against teams' scholarship limit of 13. Thus D1 schools still had the same number of scholarships overall and they were able to focus the usual amount of recruiting on high school kids.
But this year (and for the next couple years), the players who opt to stay for a 5th year will count against the 13 scholarship limit. As a result, D1 schools will have far fewer open scholarships to hand out. It means fewer available scholarships to go to high school recruits who would otherwise have gotten them. Those kids will be forced to accept lower-level offers (low-major, D2, juco, etc). Then they may look to move up each year in a continuing cycle of movement into the transfer portal for years to come.
We may already be seeing this. There have been fewer spring commitments so far by MVC schools than in past years, and none of them have been high school kids.
The only spring commitments announced so far by MVC schools are:
        Juco James Weathers by Bradley
BU transfer Jayson Kent by Indiana State
Akron transfer Bryan Trimble by Missouri State
Texas Tech transfer Sadaar Calhoun by Drake
and D2 transfer Nick Edwards by Valparaiso
Not a single high school commitment by any MVC school for the spring signing period that starts in a little over a week.

          • Here's another example of how the transfer portal, the immediate eligibility, and the NIL rules are killing the mid-major and smaller schools.
St. Peter's University was the one big "Cinderella" team of this year's NCAA Tournament. They were a #15 seed who upset #2 seed Kentucky, #7 seed Murray State, then #3 seed Purdue, before finally falling to North Carolina in the Elite 8. It was cited as an example of how more of the small schools (St. Peter's has 2,100 undergrads) and lower NET schools (St. Peter's was NET #124) should have the chance to compete in the tournament.

But today, 3 of St. Peter's top 5 scorers, who have played together at SPU for the last 3 seasons, entered the transfer portal (Daryl Banks, Doug Edert, Matthew Lee), no doubt hoping to cash in on their success and celebrity by landing at another school that offers them an NIL deal.

            Comment

            • Not that I don’t agree they may be trying to cash in, but their coach also left for Seton Hall.

If we have learned anything from the portal, a coach leaving usually means majority of team is going to end up transferring

              • Another MVC player has hit the portal- Josiah Strong- 6'4" 4th year guard from Illinois State. He spent 1 year at Navy, then a year at Iowa Western junior college. He's been a starter the last 2 seasons at ILSU and averaged 11.5 ppg both years.-
                https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba.../josiah-strong

He was ILSU's 3rd leading scorer this past season, and was their best 3-point shooter (40.9%). He is the 4th ISU player to enter the portal and has one season of eligibility left with his Covid year.

                • There are almost 1200 names in the transfer portal, yet it appears that one transfer Illinois State is recruiting a University of Virginia walk-on guard who averaged 0.9 ppg, 0.5 rpg, and 0.3 apg in his 2 seasons at UVA.
