  • 2022 Coaching turnover

There have already been multiple D1 coaches fired or who have stepped down-
Mark Turgeon at Maryland - Danny Manning interim
    Matt McCall fired by UMass
Dan Muller fired by Illinois State - Brian Jones interim
    Richard Barron fired by Maine
Chris Mack resigned at Louisville - Mike Pegues interim
Tubby Smith resigned at High Point -G.G. Smith (Tubby's son) takes over
Brian Katz retired at Sacramento State- Brandon Laird interim
    Fran O'Hanlon retired at Lafayette
Jim Hayford resigned at Seattle - Chris Victor takes over
Mike Krzyzewski to retire after season ends- Jon Scheyer to replace him

And today, one new name- UW-Milwaukee fires Pat Baldwin after 5 losing seasons
    https://www.jsonline.com/story/sport...ee/9340848002/

    Baldwin's record-
    https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb...baldwin-1.html

Expect his son Patrick Baldwin, Jr,, to transfer. He was a 4-star recruit who had offers from Duke, UCLA, Kentucky, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, and numerous other top programs. He committed to Milwaukee to play for his father. He was the highest rated recruit ever to play for a Horizon League team. But he fought injuries all year, and never could stay healthy. In 11 games, he averaged 12.1 ppg and 5.8 rpg.
No doubt, many of those same top teams will pursue him if he does leave Milwaukee (which he will).
Milwaukee's leading scorer DeAndre Gholston (14.3 ppg) wasted no time deciding. Moments after the firing of Coach Baldwin, Gholson announced he was entering the transfer portal. Expect others to follow.

To clarify for Coach, Mikey Mike is his rapper name.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

After I typed Mike, I had to copy and paste his name because I never remember how to spell it.
That's how it ended up with 2 Mike's.

ESPN+ has listed a Press Conference for Illinois State basketball on Monday at 11 am. My guess is a new coach may be introduced. They are also looking for a new Volleyball coach, but the schedule did say basketball.

That would be really fast if they are introducing a new head coach. And the great majority of potential candidates are working for teams that are still playing.

An announcement that quick would seem to indicate they were hiring someone not currently involved with a team. Steve Prohm ?

Could it be that they just want to recognize Dan Muller with a press conference to honor him?
Maybe not, but so far, the only official word from ISU or their AD was this very brief press release consisting of this even briefer mention of Muller-
Illinois State men's basketball head coach Dan Muller has made the decision to step away from his head coaching duties, effective immediately. ISU Associate Head Coach Brian Jones will serve as the program's interim head coach for the remainder of the 2021-22 season.

"Dan informed me of his decision today to step away from coaching for the remainder of the season," ISU Director of AthleticsKyle Brennan said. "We are thankful for Coach Muller's contributions as a coach and student-athlete...

You certainly could be right but if you wanted to be respectful and honor Dan why announce firing so early. Seems like the reason to announce early would be to get the hiring process moving. Maybe in an effort to get things in place quickly and hopefully avoid a total exodus from the roster. Not at all sure I am right but the puzzle pieces seem to fit.

More D1 coaches get fired today-
Full list of college basketball coaching changes for the 2021-22 season and 2022 off-season. All in one place. #CoachingCarousel

Derrin Hansen out as the head coach at the University of Nebraska Omaha (Summit League). He was 5-25 in his 10th season.
Michael Fly fired as coach at Florida Gulf Coast (Atlantic Sun)- a bit surprising since he went 21-11, and 10-6 in the ASUN
Clayton Bates steps down as coach at Western Michigan (Horizon). He was 8-23 in only his 2nd season.

                        Firings continue-
Tom Crean, once one of the hottest names in college coaching, gets fired again. University of Georgia to "part ways" with Crean after the SEC Tournament, which starts Wednesday. Crean has been at Georgia for 4 seasons and has never come close to a winning season in the SEC. His record this season is 6-25, 1-17 in the SEC. His cumulative record 47-74 overall, and 15-57 in the SEC, so far.

I know we haven’t had any turnover among assistant coaches under Wardle, but I wonder if he’d reach out to Crean if a spot opened up.
                          Gotta stop feeding the trolls.

I think that is unlikely. I don't see Crean taking a major step down to an assistant spot at a mid-major, when he's coached virtually his entire career at high-majors.
Here is his career record as a head coach. He was extremely successful at Marquette, and had some success at Indiana too (three Sweet 16's), until his final 2 seasons.

Crean signed a 6-year contract when he was hired at Georgia, so he has $3.2 million per year coming his way for the next 2 years.
Also, tI think here is a chance with all the open D1 head coaching spots that will be available this year and next, that he might have his choice of a head coaching job somewhere. I recall seeing some ISU people hoping he would be available as a replacement for Dan Muller. But the MVC may be too big of a step down for him.

Also, he was out of work for 1 year after Indiana fired him (2017) and when Georgia hired him (201, and he did some ESPN TV analyst work. And I thought he was very good. So we might see him go back to TV work.
