After 20+ years of success at Butler, Lavall Jordan took over a 25-win team from Chris Holtman (now at Ohio State) and has turned Butler into a losing program the last 2 years.

Butler finished next-to-last in the Big East the last 2 seasons.
Thad Matta was very successful as the head coach at Ohio State from 2004 to 2015, but his final 2 seasons were a disappointment. He was fired 5 years ago, and attributed his team's poor performance to his "health problems".

Matta has been out of coaching for 5 years now. From the reaction of Butler fans I am seeing on social media, many are not happy with this choice.

Western Michigan hired Dwayne Stephens, an assistant to Tom Izzo at Michigan State.

Mark Montgomery went to Northern Illinois from Izzo's staff and that didn't work out too well. Maybe Stephens will do better.

Tom Izzo is certainly one of the greatest college coaches of all time. But his assistants who have gotten head coaching jobs have not always had much success.
Here are all his previous former assistants who got head coaching jobs-
Brian Gregory, who was a candidate for the Bradley job way back in 2002.eventually got the head coaching job at Dayton. He made the NCAA Tournament his first year, but then only made one more NCAA tournament over the next 17 seasons at Dayton, Georgia Tech, and South Florida, and has never won an NCAA Tournament game.
Tom Crean was successful at Marquette, but not so much at Indiana. And he was a failure at Georgia, where he never had a winning season and was fired after going 6-26 this year.
Mike Garland got the head coaching job at Cleveland State in 2003, and was fired after 3 terrible losing seasons (23-60). He's been back working for Tom Izzo since 2007 and has never gotten another head coaching job.
Stan Joplin was head coach at Toledo for 12 years, he won the MAC regular season title 4 times, but never made it to the NCAA. He was fired and never got another head coaching job.
Maurice Joseph took over a 28 win team at George Washington, and got worse each year until he was fired 3 years later after going 9-24.
Doug Wojcik was head coach at Tulsa and College of Charleston and was fired by both schools. He never made the NCAA Tournament, and was fired in shame in 2014 by C of C for numerous player abuse incidents. He's never gotten another head coaching job.
Mark Montgomery, who you mentioned, was heralded as a brilliant coach, but in 10 seasons at NIU, his teams were terrible, never came close to a postseason tournament, and he was fired after going 3-16 in 2020-21.
Jim Boylan was an Izzo assistant from1986-89, and he then got the head coaching job at New Hampshire, where he was a failure. He was 15-69 in 3 years there and was fired. It turned out good for him as he got an NBA scouting job, and parlayed that into a long career as an NBA assistant and head coach.
Stan Heath has has a little bit more success, but it has not been sustained. He moved from Kent State to Arkansas to South Florida where his career stalled out. He was fired by USF and did not get another job until this year at Eastern Michigan, where he went 10-21.
Drew Valentine- I'm not sure he really qualifies as a Tom Izzo protégé because he was only a graduate assistant at Michigan State for a couple years and never an assistant coach. He is actually a Porter Moser protégé. He had success this season as head coach at Loyola. But then, he inherited a 26-win NCAA team loaded with talent that Moser recruited. Let's see what he can do on his own.

La Salle hires a name that should be quite familiar to Philadelphians- Fran Dunphy- as their new head coach.
Dunphy is a former La Salle assistant coach, and he was head coach at Penn from 1989-2006 and at Temple from 2006-2019.

Former Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovich retires at SMU.

Jankovich is just 62 years old. In 7 seasons at SMU, he made the NCAA Tournament once in his first full season after taking over for Larry Brown. losing in the first round. His 2021-22 team finished 24-9, 13-4 in the AAC, and in 2nd place. But they failed to get an NCAA bid mainly due to a horrible non-conference SOS (224), something he was well known for at ISU. They lost in the 2nd round of the NIT.

Xavier Associate Head Coach Jonas Hayes, who took over from Travis Steele and lead Xavier to the NIT Championship and was then replaced by Xavier's hiring of Sean Miller, will become the new head coach at Georgia State.
