Bad news for @DrakeBulldogsMB
fans: Just received word that Roman Penn is out after suffering a small fracture in his left foot. It's the same foot Penn injured in February that sidelined him for Drake's NCAA Tournament run.
Roman Penn missed the end of last season and Drake's NCAA tournament run after breaking the same foot in February. The amount of time he'll be out is unknown.
Even a "small fracture" in one of the weight-bearing foot bones will take at least a couple months to heal. The only other guard on their active roster who has played much point guard in the past is Ayo Akinwole, a 5th year grad-transfer from Omaha. In his 4 years at Omaha, his assist numbers were modest and he was the team's main three point shooter. But they will need more than one PG. They could move DJ Wilkins to PG, but it would slow their offense down a lot. Their offense was sluggish today without Penn in a win over St. Thomas that was a lot closer than it should have been.
They do also have a freshman point guard, Conor Enright, who has not played at all this season. Head Coach Darian DeVries had said that Enright was going to be a redshirt. But now I suspect DeVries will have to activate him.
