Tyreke Key announces he is leaving Indiana State

Indiana State plays a preseason exhibition game tomorrow night against Division III Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, which is located about 4 miles east of the Hulman Center. But 1st team All-MVC player Tyreke Key will not play tomorrow, and it's unknown if he'll play next Tuesday in their first regular season game.. He suffered a subluxed right shoulder joint (his shooting side), and it is said to be the 3rd time his shoulder has subluxed (partially dislocated).

He will meet with a doctor tomorrow (Thursday, 11/4), and decide on the course of action.

I'm not surprised that Key is transferring. Lots of players transfer for their grad year, or when their coach has been replaced. And the success his former teammate at InSU, Jake LaRavia has had at Wake Forest (15 ppg, 7 rpg, and 41% from three in the ACC), has certainly proven good players can be successful at the Power 5 Conference level. And we have seen examples before that the new immediate eligibility rules have turned mid-majors into "minor leagues" for the big boys.
But OTOH, to make this announcement before the end of their regular season is a really bad move. And I don't doubt that Coach Schertz is right that there have been "people in his ear".

At the end of the day, ultimately ‘Reke decided to come back with all of that pressure last year and he made the decision that he wasn’t coming back with the same amount of pressure.”
Schertz was asked if he could identify the parties he’s talking about. He declined to do so.
“I’m going to leave it as it is. It’s not one person, it’s people in the year I’ve been here working behind the scenes to make things difficult. That’s a part of it. At the end of the day, we have to focus on things we control. We can’t control what someone or someone’s are doing,” Schertz said.

Since Schertz cited an unnamed current college coach, he was also asked if he intended to pursue a tampering charge against the coach he referenced.
“There’s no rules on people who aren’t in college athletics. There are on those in college athletics. I’ll let our compliance staff handle that. Everybody’s certainly going to be looking at it. In today’s world? It’s so hard to prove. There’s a lot of means and mechanisms to connect with somebody,” Schertz said.

Yes, and I agree. I hope he reports it to the NCAA. However, few cases of tampering are ever proven, and if the NCAA investigates, those involved aren't going to admit they broke rules. The NCAA did rule in favor of Bradley's claims of tampering in the Danny Granger case in 2003. But there were cell phone records obtained by the Albuquerque Journal through FOIA requests that proved the New Mexico coaches were lying when they denied illegal contact.

The previous season, Bradley filed a claim with the NCAA for tampering by Wisconsin-Milwaukee head coach Bruce Pearl. Pearl enticed Joah Tucker to leave Bradley and play for him at UW-M. Tucker had played in open gyms at UW-Milwaukee during the spring break on 2002, and Pearl was there, and Tucker admitted he talked to him. But without harder evidence, the NCAA ruled against BU's claim. Tucker went on to a great career at UW-M, became All-Horizon League 1st team twice ('05 & '06), lead Milwaukee to back to back Horizon League Championships ('05 & '06), tournament championships and NCAA bids in 2005 & 2006, a Sweet 16 in 2005, and helped Bruce Pearl get the head coaching job at Tennessee.
