  • 2021 Red-White Scrimmage

If anyone else has comments about tonight's Red-White Scrimmage, please post them...

Here are my thoughts and observations-
Both the women's and men's teams played two 8-minute halves and the scrimmage was officiated by referees.

The women's scrimmage involved a lot more offense, and not as much defense. The final result was a Red 35 - White 35 tie.
The 2 teams seemed equally matched. There were quite a few 3-pointers made. 5th year grad student Gabi Haack was clearly the top talent on the floor, but all 15 rostered players managed to score. Gabi had 12 points on 5-6 shooting to lead all scorers. The newcomers looked very good. Freshmen Sasha Koenig (Red team) and Carolyn Waite (White team) looked good shooting from the perimeter. Each scored 8 points. Other freshman and transfers contributed. Transfers Sierra Morrow and Daija Powell are tall and athletic and will give Bradley strength in the frontcourt that hopefully helps replace the production of Emily Marsh, Nyjah White, and the Petree sisters
    Bradley summary- https://bradleybraves.com/news/2021/...35-35-tie.aspx

In the men's scrimmage- no stats or summary is posted yet, so the following is from my memory-
The 3 walk-ons did not play, unless I missed seeing it. The scholarship players all played fairly even minutes, except Ville, who was out with a boot on his right foot & ankle and using a kneel-on scooter. The coaches had several players switch sides at halftime, so the score is less meaningful.
The 1st half score (8 minute halves) was Red 17 - White 10. At halftime, the Red team got even stronger, as most of the likely starters collected on the Red team (Mast, Henry, Leons, Roberts). The 2nd half score was Red 15 - White 10.
Rienk Mast, who played for White in the first half and for Red in the 2nd half dominated at times, as did Ja'Shon Henry, who played with Red. They were among the top scorers, pending the official stats.
The play was a little sloppy, as these early season scrimmages always are. There were innumerable deflected passes and turnovers, which kept the scoring down. This probably comes from more athletic guys with long arms, as well as the fact they know all of the offensive plays and sets the other team will run.

Others who stood out (based on my memory)-
Terry Roberts- fans are going to love Terry! He is listed at 6'3", but appears to be a bit shorter, but he is extremely quick, made a couple perimeter shots, and got into the lane several times to score as well. He is also quick on defense and caused a lot of turnovers and disruptions to the other team.
Malevy Leons- Scored a couple baskets and looks like he probably will be in the starting lineup with his athleticism, size, and skills.
Jason Kent has gotten stronger and appears he may have grown a bit. He looked good shooting and handling the ball. He was among the leading scorers on the night, though he passed up some good shots.

If I had to pick 5 starters based on tonight's scrimmage (with Ville out), it would be the above 5 guys.

    Others-
Ari Boya looked good and showed no effects from his leg and foot problems. He scored a couple baskets and grabbed a couple rebounds.
Connor Linke looks a bit improved and more confident. He mainly set screens and defended, but did not look to score.
Darius Hannah made a couple nice plays and deflected several passes with his long arms. He didn't take many shots. I recall one dunk
Zek Montgomery should get playing time when the games begin. He looks long and athletic for a guard and appears to be offensive minded, though I only recall one basket.
Max Ekono showed nice skills, but wasn't very aggressive. I think his only points were a couple free thrown, but he also has quickness and long arms and looked good on defense.
Mikey Howell didn't score that I recall, and he struggled at times with pressure from the bigger guards, but did make a couple nice passes.
Connor Hickman looked like a freshman and missed the couple shots he took. But he appeared to handle the ball well and make good decisions.

Here are some stats leaders from the men's scrimmage-
    https://twitter.com/bradleyumbb/stat...54813759389696

Points: Terry Roberts (10) Henry / Kent / Mast (9)
    Assists: Mikey Howell (3)
Rebounds: Rienk Mast (4) Zek Montgomery (4)
Steals: Malevy Leons (3) Terry Roberts (3)

If a scrimmage summary gets posted by the men's team, we'll try to post a link here.

    Good observations DC. Here’s mine.

    Decent/good crowd size.
Veteran guys Henry, Mast, Boya look rock solid.
Kent looks to be taking a significant step forward to me.
PG Roberts looks like a great fit and will be exciting. Can shoot and drive as well as handle.
Leons looks like an impact player as expected. He’s thin but very smooth and his D is also quite good.
None of the freshmen look weak, and I like what I see from the eye test.

But now it’s all about attitude, hard work, chemistry. potential is there for a great season.

    Compete. Defend. Rebound. Win.

Nice crowd......Mast is gonna be a stud, Henry did his thing and Kent looks like a contributor this season, really added muscle to his body and looks to have even grown an inch. Hard to tell a lot when the guy guarding you knows your every move from practice. Montgomery got off a shot over Boya in the paint....impressive for a freshman. Robert's is really smooth with a soft touch on his shot. Hannah can still dunk and seemed really quick. Leon's is a nice pickup and there will be some adjustment time and he will be a nice addition but man is he skinny.

Thanks for the recaps, I know Leons has a bit more pedigree but I don’t want to let myself get too excited. Tyrone Cole-Scott had a great Red/White and it was probably the best he ever played for Bradley.

You are thinking of the first exhibition game in 2007, Cole-Scott scored 36. He pretty much never did anything after that.
PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior guard Tyrone Cole-Scott (Waterloo, Iowa/East H.S.), a first-year transfer from Tyler (Texas) Junior College, scored a game-high 36 points in just 21 minutes, leading four Bradley players in double-figures and sparking the Braves (1-0 preseason) to a 110-84 exhibition victory versus Saint Ambrose (0-1 preseason) Thursday night in front of 4,150 fans in what is expected to be the final men's basketball game in the storied history of Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse.? A 5-foot-10 guard who drained 192 3-pointers in his two-year junior college career, Cole-Scott made 10-of-12 field goal attempts, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, and all 10 of his free throw attempts to lead Bradley's offensive onslaught Thursday night.? He also shared game-high honors with five assists and made off with two steals.? Bradley's three top returning guard also turned in double-digit scoring efforts against the Fighting Bees:? senior point guard Daniel Ruffin (Peoria, Ill./Central H.S.) added 17 points, four assists and three steals in just 19 minutes, while sophomore guard Andrew Warren (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) chipped in with 15 points and senior guard Jeremy Crouch (Pekin, Ill./Pekin H.S.) added 11 points and a game-high four steals.? Junior swingman Theron Wilson (Topeka, Kan./Highland Park H.S.) led the Braves with 10 rebounds.

Nice work by the women's team to quickly post a summary of the scrimmage for fans who were not able to attend.
This article was posted on the BU women's website at 7:44 pm, less than an hour after the scrimmage ended-
              https://bradleybraves.com/sports/wom...ll?path=wbball

But a day later and still not a single mention of anything related to the men's scrimmage on the BU men's basketball website?
              https://bradleybraves.com/sports/men...ll?path=mbball

              Local media coverage-

WEEK (NBC- Channel 25) Sports Director Jim Mattson was at the entire scrimmage with his camera, so they may have had some video on their nightly news, but it is not posted on the WEEK website. They may have more highlights on their news/sports reports today-

WHOI (ABC- Channel 19) had a brief video report on their nightly news and it's now on their website with a few photos-
              https://hoiabc.com/2021/10/13/2021-2...te-scrimmages/

And WMBD TV (CBS Channel 31) had a brief video report on their nightly news, and it's now on the website-
              https://www.centralillinoisproud.com...te-scrimmages/

PJ Star Bradley beat writer Dave Eminian posted this brief video from from the first possession in the scrimmage on his Twitter page-
              https://twitter.com/icetimecleve/sta...42630237573122

However, pretty much non-existent coverage from the PJ Star. There is no story or description of the scrimmage anywhere on the PJ Star webpage, though their photographer, Sam Thomas, did post a few of photos at 1:32 am this morning-

I remember going home from the St. AMBROSE game thinking we stole a recruit after TCS lit them up for 36 pts. That definitely was his career high game.

What's the reason for this DC? You'd think Bradley would have the same person writing a recap for each game to post immediately. Still nothing up today for the men.

Tried to post last night after the scrimmage but apparently I screwed it up. Not much to add, nothing to disagree with in the comments above. Good to see Henry still has his trademark aggressiveness going to the rim. Leons looks like he has about a 20 foot wingspan. And Roberts looks like just what we need at point.

In the women's scrimmage what surprised me was it didn't seem like the defense was very intense. There were several occasions where I saw players just give up on defense when their opponent beat them by a half step going to the basket.

IT JUST FELT SO GOOD TO WATCH LIVE BRADLEY BASKETBALL AGAIN !!!

PJ Star finally has an article about the scrimmage on their website this morning, but too late to reach the newspaper readers-
                      https://www.pjstar.com/story/sports/...es/8446754002/

A few comments from Coach Wardle-
                      • "We fought through fatigue. We put them through a long practice just before the scrimmage, for just that reason, to test them facing fatigue. We wanted to see how they responded."

                      • "We didn't shoot really well, but at this point the defense is usually ahead of the offense. We had some good deflections, some good decisions. And the fans being present was just great for us."

                      • "An all-red-white team? (Grinning). Well, Ja'Shon Henry, Jayson Kent, Rienk Mast and Terry Roberts were very good. There were a lot of guys who could be in there, maybe Malevy Leons. We'll know much better how everyone looked when we watch the film. The film doesn't lie."

Coach seems to agree with me:

With the apparent depth and barring any more preseason injuries, I think the coaches might consider red-shirting a couple of players. I don’t have anyone in mind, but trying to work more than 10-12 players into the line-up is very difficult.

The Ladies have always been a more offense then defense but then the D creates the offense. Gabi is one of the best Lady BB players of all time at BU. Tatum is also a vert good senior. The new players are going to help the team and having more height is also nice to see as the Valley teams seem to be getting taller.

As for the guys I agree with most of the comments made. Boya is going to dominate in the few minutes he plays, as long as he stays out of foul trouble. Mast, Henry, Roberts and Leons showed a lot. Leons and Roberts are going to help defensively as both are very quick and seem like they have a long wing span. Kent looked much improved also. Hannah, Howell, and Montgomery seem like nice complimentary players that will help the team also. Hickman didn't look real impressive but on the other hand he didn't make mistakes either. He showed that he has been very well coached and knows BB. Ekono looks like he could be OK but needs to learn the speed of the D1 BB. Given time I think both of these players will be a big help. Linke still has a way to go but given a couple more years and he should be a good help also.
If I was picking a starting line up right now I would pick Boya, Henry, Mast, Roberts, and Leons with Kent and Howell being one of the first ones off the bench The could change depending on VT's foot and how soon he is ready to play.

There are a lot of coaches who like to develop recruits, or "warehouse talent" by using a redshirt year, especially their first year in Division I. Coach Jacobson at UNI seems to redshirt recruits nearly every year and it seems to work for him sometimes.

But, Coach Wardle does not like to redshirt scholarship players (excluding injuries like with Rienk Mast), and he rarely does.
The only 2 redshirt decisions that have been made with scholarship players are these:
Antoine Pittman redshirted in 2017-18, the year between his sophomore and junior seasons, reportedly at his own request to work on his shooting and offensive game. When he came back and played in 2018-19, he found himself competing against better players on a better team and ended up playing far fewer minutes and had his worst season at Bradley, averaging just 3.1 ppg and 1.6 rpg. He transferred to Division II Maryville.
Jerome Merritt was a very raw, athletic recruit who redshirted his freshman season (2016-17). But, he was not ready for Division I, and left to attend a junior college after that season and never made it back to D1. It was a wasted year of scholarship.

In neither of those cases did taking a redshirt year benefit the player or the team, IMO, and it's hard to find any redshirt cases in Bradley's history that did (maybe Danny Adams in 2002-03, though he remained a role player throughout his career). Players generally get better by playing against competition, and not by sitting out or being practice players.

So if the coaches did consider redshirting someone, who would it be? It would have to be one of the 3 freshmen, since the other new players (Leons, Roberts, Howell) are going to play key roles and are not redshirt candidates. But with the uncertainty about Ville, these 3 freshman are all guards who may be needed.
I think Zek Montgomery has a chance to get significant playing time as a freshman. He adds size, athleticism, rebounding, and defense in the backcourt.
Max Ekono- He also has potential to get playing time, and it would be difficult for a European kid to accept a redshirt year as soon as he gets here. He came here to play, and would probably leave if asked to redshirt.
Connor Hickman is another big guard with skills and a good shooting touch. If his shoulder injury shows any signs of not being 100%, maybe he is a consideration. But I hear he is 100% healthy, and I think it would be difficult for him to accept a redshirt and sit out another year. Recall that he missed his entire senior high school season with the shoulder injury.

And as noted above, it doesn't always do the player or the team any good. I don't see anyone redshirting.
