  • Drake to make announcement tomorrow regarding men's and women's basketball

Drake Athletic Department just posted this cryptic tweet regarding their men's and women's basketball programs with an announcement to come tomorrow (Tuesday, Sept. 21)-

The 13 second video shows only the downtown Des Moines region, and not the Drake campus.
One thought I had was they might move one of their games to the downtown Wells Fargo Arena, but that seems unlikely as they have posted their full schedule showing all home non-conference and MVC conference games scheduled to be played at the Knapp Center.
It doesn't seem anyone on their fan message board has any clues.

Here is their announcement..."Drake Hoop Fest", a preseason fan experience event on a street in downtown Des Moines.
The Drake University men's and women's basketball teams are set to take to the streets of Des Moines Sept. 30 for Drake Hoops Fest, a one-of-a-kind fan experience on Des Moines' historic Court Avenue.

Sounds like a nice idea, but there is a risk with an outdoor event. Bradley tried something like this on October 17, 2014. But the problem was that Joanne Glasser and Mike Cross decided to do away with the Itoo Hall event and the Red-White Scrimmage and replace them with a new even they called the Red-White River Jam.
PEORIA — Bradley basketball’s inaugural Red-White River Jam is 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday on the Riverfront. The free event features introductions of the men’s and women’s teams, autographs, face painti…

It was a fan event held along the riverfront with the men's and women's players signing autographs, shooting hoops with kids on portable baskets, team introductions, live music, food vendors, etc. It might have been a nice idea, but in Bradley's case, because the administration offended a lot of fans by canceling the longstanding Itoo Hall spaghetti Supper and the Red-White scrimmage which fans enjoyed, and because Bradley was in a historically bad losing stretch it was not that well received by fans. Then to make things worse, the weather was cold and rainy that night, and likely hurt attendance.

Here is an old thread I found with fans criticizing the cancellation of the Itoo Hall and Red-White events, then commenting on the River Jam-

There was a lot of criticism of the changes, despite the Athletic Department representative trying to argue that it was a good idea. And it seems the critics were right. The River Jam turned out to be a one-time thing. That entire 2014-15 season was a total disaster. Fans and donors abandoned the team in droves, ticket sales and donations plummeted, there were more no-shows at some games than actual fans, record low attendance, the losing and last-place finishes continued, and in the end, the coaches were fired, the roster was purged, and even the AD and University President, whose "fans be damned" attitude lead them to change things that didn't need to be changed, were fired. Then, immediately when Chris Reynolds was named the new AD, he promised to bring back all the old events and they have been well attended. In addition, fan interest returned, and the the entire program turned around and was built back to a successful level again.
