  • Valparaiso's new nickname- The Beacons

Valparaiso dropped their Crusaders nickname last February, and today announced their new nickname is The Beacons.

They selected the nickname Beacons from a list of 8 finalists, which were narrowed from an initial list of over 1,000 suggestions-
The Valpo Storm, Beacons, Gold, Sparks, Lightning, Tempest, Dunehawks and Lightning Hawks.
The name Beacons was chosen because it reflects on the university's motto, "In Thy Light We See Light".

    Video announcement-
We. Are. BEACONS. Valparaiso University's new nickname directly connects to our motto, "In Thy Light We See Light," and represents the entire Valpo family. W...

There are actually already 2 universities that use the nickname "Beacons", so it is not entirely unique, though Valpo will be the only Division I school with the Beacons name.

    Iggy Beacon-

University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons- a Division III university in Boston, MA- http://www.beaconsathletics.com/

Valparaiso has not yet introduced a mascot for their new nickname.

There was concern it was becoming associated with modern polarizing groups (sometimes called "hate groups") as well as its connection with Religious warriors of the past.
There have been a number of other colleges as well as many high schools, including one Peoria high school, that dropped the Crusaders name in recent years.

Congrats to the Valpo Lighthouses... may your stream be stronger than that of a 60 year old man with an enlarged prostrate.

Lame name. Can't wait to see their lame mascot.

Everything other than The Bradley Braves already seems lame… this change to the Valpo Beacons certainly adds to the disparity.
