  • Bradley summer update

Dave Eminian of the PJ Star posted a summer update-

    A couple clips-
Bradley finished up its first summer workout session, with a roster that has eight new players on it — including two new preferred walk-ons.
Wardle likes the size and intelligence of his team so far. He says the influx of new players — and the collective size they bring — has caused him to tweak some things offensively, and look at some different defensive tactics. Yet the program's core principles will be the same. "We're long, tall, I really liked how the ball moved and the basketball IQ with this group is impressive," Wardle said. "When you enter that paint you better be ready to finish on us, because we got a lot of guys who are going to get after it." Leons was a standout in the June session. "Talented player," Wardle said. "Better off the dribble than I thought. Shooting well. Very mature man. He's got a bright future. He's been living in the weight room... " Wardle liked what he saw from Howell and Roberts, as well.
"They were impressive," Wardle said. "I couldn't have been happier about all our guys. Just being able to get back to a normal summer routine is big. Our freshmen last year didn't have that because of the pandemic. You can see the difference it is making in guys like Darius Hannah, how quickly he's progressed this summer." Wardle said 7-foot-1 BU center Ari Boya, who missed the entire conference schedule last season with his foot in a walking boot, has been cleared to play and took part in the June sessions. "When you have a big guy like that, who has had some injuries, you have to be careful with him, protect him," Wardle said. "Ari goes two days on, third day off. He'll probably never go three days in a row again... The next camp session is July 12-Aug. 13.

Good news.... except for Boya. It has been pretty obvious that he is injury prone like a lot of 7 footers, I really think he could be a huge help for us if he could stay healthy. Maybe they will take it easier on him now and he can get through a whole season. He will probably never play a ton of minutes but hopefully he can make his minutes impactful.

Nevertheless this should be a good season coming up, I think this could be Wardle's best team yet. It is time for some redemption after the ending to last season. We have some great athletes coming in and we finally have some good size now which is one thing that can really get exploited when we play P5 teams.

Summarizing what I am hearing, Ari Boya is close to 100% and playing as well as ever. When he is fully healthy, he is a difference-maker. There is nobody else like him in the Valley with his ability to defend near the basket and block shots.
But, foot and ankle injuries that have limited him in every one of his 3 seasons at Bradley. In 3 seasons, Ari has played a cumulative total of 568 minutes. Bradley had 5 guys who played more than that just last in last year's shortened season. So, the focus now on adjusting his minutes and practice days is a smart move. Fortunately, it shouldn't hurt Bradley, since there is better big man depth now than at any time I can recall. There are 5 guys who are 6'9" or taller (Boya [7'1"], Leons [6'9"], Mast [6'9"], Hannah [6'9"], & Linke [6'9"]) and capable of playing inside, plus Ja'Shon Henry at 6'6", who can play the 3 or 4 position well and defend bigger opponents. So we shouldn't look at the news about Ari as bad news. I'm sure we'd all rather have him for 15-20 minutes per game for the whole season and postseason, than to have him full time for just 9 games like last year.

And speaking of more size, I am looking forward to watching Bradley's guards. Though there might be a lack of D1 experience, I don't think Bradley has ever had this much size among the guards as we will have in 2021-22. The only guards under 6'3" and the 2 new freshman walk-on guards, who are listed as 6'2".
          Cade Hardtke- 6'2"
          Sam Hennessy- 6'2"
          Terry Roberts- 6'3"
          Mikey Howell- 6'3"
          Connor Hickman- 6'3"
          Ville Tahvanainen- 6'4"
          Riley Burger- 6'5"
          Zek Montgomery- 6'6"
          Jayson Kent- 6'7"
          Max Ekono- 6'7"

Rienk Mast (19) continues working on NBA dream at ACLO

            Text:
His absolute dream is to play in the world's biggest basketball league, the NBA. Basketball player Rienk Mast is temporarily back in Groningen.

Rienk left basketball club Donar in 2019 for the United States of America to play college basketball at Bradley University. When he left he had just suffered a serious knee injury at Donar. The first year he focused on his recovery and studies. In the second year, the long forward made more and more minutes. Due to a teammate's injury, he became a starting player, and made a big impression.

Now Rienk is back in Groningen for a while, between the seasons. And there he trains on a landscaped field outside next to the ACLO on the Zernike terrain. "If you sometimes put everything in perspective, it's cool to make everything with it," says Rienk. "Certainly if you come back and everyone asks: How is it there? And then you're like: I'm going through something that not many people do."

And highlights from Rienk Mast's last game against SIU in the MVC Tournament 3/4/21- 24 points, 10 rebounds

I think Rienk looks like he has slimmed down slightly and has more muscularity in that video. It will be tough to keep him at Bradley for 4 more years, but I like the thought.

There is not a harder worker than Mast. He is serious about getting better every day. He has a very regimented practice routine and he can be found hours after practice putting up shot after shot. He is leader by example and I will be glad when he gets back on campus with his new teammates.

I'd think Mast would stay all four years at Bradley and possibly graduate early. The business school would be a logical choice for him to add an MBA if he's able to get his degree in 3 years.

Let me correct a misconception... Except for a couple months in 2005 when Bradleyfans got started, tornado was never a moderator. He was only a frequent poster. He is still an avid Bradley fan, but doesn't waste his time here like the rest of us.
