  • Drake player surprised with scholarship

    Here's a nice story...
Garrett Stutz joined the Drake basketball team in 2018 as a walk-on. In his 3 seasons as a walk-on, Drake has won 24, 20, and 26 games, and Sturtz has been an important piece of Drake's success. He played in all 65 of Drake's game the last 2 seasons, and started 16 of them. And his stats have improved each season, despite not being one of Drake's main scoring options.
Garrett Sturtz (3) Guard - Graduate Student (2022-23): All-MVC Third Team…former walk-on who has played in more career basketball games than any player in MVC history

Today at a team meeting, his coach Darian DeVries surprised him by awarding him a scholarship-

Extremely well deserved. Good for him and good for Drake for doing it.

Wow. I didn't realize he was a walk-on. Really helped them later in the season after the injuries. Well deserved

Good for him. My understanding is that he hasn't paid any tuition at Drake. His mother is employed at Central College in Pella , Iowa. Their is some type of agreement between the private schools in Iowa that lets family members go to school tuition free if a family member works for one of the schools.
