  • Division II schools being hit hard by transfer portal and immediate eligibility rules

Division II schools are being hit especially hard by the immediate eligibility rule for D1 schools as the D2 coaches see many of their D2 kids looking to move up to D1. Here is a good article-

Division II has always had immediate eligibility for kids who transfer into D2, from another D2 or from D1. But in the past, D2 players who wanted to transfer up to a D1 had to sit out a year. That meant it happened infrequently. But this year's change allowing immediate eligibility for most transfers to D1 has drawn hundreds of D2 players into the transfer portal, hoping to get a scholarship at a D1 school. As the article points out, some D2 schools have seen as many as 8, 9, or 10 of their players enter the transfer portal. Now, probably most of those kids won't end up getting D1 offers, and will eventually settle back to a D2 school. And some of the D1 kids who entered the transfer portal might not land at another D1 school and have to settle for a D2 offer. So in the end, the D2 schools will probably re-fill their rosters. But this really makes it hard for D2 coaches to build and develop their teams. They are hoping this immediate eligibility is only a 1-year thing, because if it is allowed every year, then D2 will become more like Junior Colleges, where all the good players leave every year and coaches have to rebuild every year.
