  • Missouri Valley still pursuing expansion plans- surprising new school being considered

Recall that when Valparaiso was added to the MVC back in the spring of 2017 to replace Wichita State, a committee of University Presidents and officials from member schools was formed by Commissioner Doug Elgin to look into further expansion, since several other good quality schools had applied and wanted to join the MVC at that time (Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Murray State, and others). That expansion committee was to work on the plan to expand to 12 teams, and divide the MVC into two 6-team divisions. And they were to announce the results of the work after the 2017-18 season. But that was the last news about the committee that was ever released, and we have heard no further news about possible MVC expansion. But, now we can say the expansion plans are definitely still being pursued.

A Chicago sports blogger named Matt Brown, who writes a sports blog named Extra Points, has done some good work to dig into this situation, and he's come up with some interesting findings. First, he heard rumors from sources he doesn't identify, that the MVC is working to add two more schools.
Through Open Records requests, he asked University of Texas-Arlington, a member of the Sun Belt Conference, for "all communication between their university president and/or athletic director and representatives of the Missouri Valley Conference over the last six months via email, phone, or Zoom".
And he was able to obtain an email chain from December between MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin and the UT-A Athletic Director discussing MVC expansion. After receiving that initial records request, UT-A clammed up and redacted further emails and when contacted, they sent this response-.

...we are acutely aware of the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics, and conference realignment is – and has been – a driving force in that change. With that reality in place, we are constantly evaluating and conversing about UTA’s position relative to our peers. We are located in a national top-5 media market with a growing population and fertile recruiting base. Those factors, among others, make UTA attractive to many; however, every decision we make is with the best interest of our student-athletes, department and university at the forefront of our minds.

The MVC released a brief response to a question about these findings that did not deny what the emails said, but refused to comment further. This was their response-

I can assure you that we are always monitoring the landscape, and looking at growth opportunities that can strengthen our league. We have a membership working group that is comprised of a subset of our university presidents, and this group has always been thoughtful in their analysis of potential threats and opportunities. But right now, I have nothing specific to say about any institution.

Here is the Extra Points blog with more info- https://www.extrapointsmb.com/confer...eveland-state/
And an earlier blog (scroll to the bottom section)- https://www.extrapointsmb.com/the-la...e-realignment/

So we now know that work on expansion of the MVC is still actively going on. And although the only school we know the MVC has been actively discussing membership with in the last few months is Texas-Arlington, it seems certain that other schools have been contacted as well, most likely schools that showed interest in 2017- Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Green Bay, Murray State, Cleveland State, Nebraska-Omaha, UIC and maybe others, such as private schools Belmont, Lipscomb, Bellarmine, and Denver.
The new MVC Commissioner, former Big 12 Executive Associate Commissioner, Jeff Jackson, will take over from retiring Doug Elgin on July 1, 2021. Interesting that the Big 12 Conference is headquartered in Irving, Texas, just a few miles from UT-Arlington.
Maybe we'll hear more about expansion after the new commissioner takes over?

UW-GB and Belmont would be pretty nice to add...Belmont a bit far geographically, but it's a solid hoops program for sure...and UT-ArL geographically way too far. Hope this doesn't happen!

I'd prefer Murray State over UW-GB, and it's a better fit geographically.

The other finalists in 2017 when Valparaiso was chosen were Murray State and Milwaukee. So I would expect those 2 to be high on the list again if the MVC adds 2 schools. Belmont was approached by the MVC in both 2013 (when Creighton left) and 2017 (when Wichita State left), but they turned down an invitation both times. In 2017, it had a lot to do with them being in their first season in the Ohio Valley. But now they might be more open. They were screwed this season by the NCAA selection committee. They were 26-4, and by far the best team in the OVC. They finished 1st in the regular season, but were upset in the championship of their conference tournament. The did not get a bid to either the NCAA Tournament or the NIT, because they are forced to play so many lousy RPI teams in the Ohio Valley Conference that dragged their NET rank down to 90. The OVC was 22nd in conference RPI, had 5 teams with 300+ RPI, and 7 of the 12 OVC teams had worse RPI's than the worst MVC team. I think now they might be ready to ditch the OVC.

Nashville and the Dallas-Ft. Worth area are well outside of the current MVC footprint, though Belmont might be worth the extra travel distance since they are a high quality program in a major media area. But the reason those are being considered is the idea that the MVC would be split into 2 divisions. If Belmont was added, they could be combined with Evansville, Indiana State, SIU, Bradley, and Illinois State, and the longest direct flight time among those would be Peoria to Nashville, which is only slightly more than one hour.
I would favor another attempt to get Belmont because it is a high quality private school program that focuses on basketball and does not play football. I dislike the idea of Texas-Arlington. Their average home attendance over the last 10 years (not including this past season) is only around 2,000 per game. Their games are on ESPN+ and not on local TV or national TV. And with all the other schools and pro sports teams in the Dallas area, the argument that Dallas is the 5th largest media market in the country is rather meaningless. They don't get much attention from their local media.

I believe part of the expansion problem has been the schools with football want another team or two that play football while the basketball only schools are more interested in adding basketball schools.
The only plus I see to San Antonio is it is a larger TV market (and Da Coach says their games are not broadcast). Lots of travel for everyone.

Killer B-UT Arlington is in the Dallas area not San Antonio. I really don’t get the fascination with a few of the “big City” schools. They are often afterthoughts in the metropolitan areas- have mediocre fan support and very little if any media exposure. I also do think you really have to find a major advantage to significantly spread the conference geography. It really does increase costs and men’s basketball is a fairly minor component-it is also all of the other teams and the increased time away from class for the students. I remember how much Majeras disliked the A-10. It works for a school like Mizou who gets a cut of SEC football $ and gets a cut of multiple NCAA bids. Not sure you get any of that with many of the expansion options. Maybe you could go as far as Belmont but I really can’t see going further afield.

Of course it's the Dallas area. I had UTSA on my mind for some reason.
doesn't change the point though does it.

There are worse schools than UT Arlington, but I don't think I have ever heard anyone say we should add them to the Valley. What would be the point of adding one school in Texas? Sure they can talk about the "media exposure" but who really cares in a big metro area about essentially a commuter school's athletic programs? I would rather have us add another quality school here in the midwest or close by.

I wish they could talk St. Louis University into coming back to the Valley
