If you count all the past and present Valley teams in the dance, we'd be looking pretty darn good.
    Larry Bird
I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Hemphill did not start. He is expected to play. Not sure how much though.

Both teams dealing with some Big Dance nerves after the first 5 minutes. Drake is 2-6 overall and has 3 turnovers while Wichita is 2-8 overall. 5-5 with 14:40 left.

Drake off to a bad start offensively as they are just 2-11 overall, 1-4 from 3 but Wichita struggling as well as they are 4-16, 1-6 from 3. Hemphill came into the game with around 14:00 left and he's got 1 point and 4 rebounds. Off an 8-1 run in the last 4:00 the Shockers lead 10-6 with 11:16 left.

Drake has gone almost 9:00 with no FG's now 2-15 overall, 1-6 from 3 and have 6 turnovers and are losing to the Shockers 16-6 with 7:42 left. The Bulldogs are having a really hard time with how physical Wichita is playing them.

It took them awhile but Drake's offense finally woke up as they outscored Wichita 10-0 in the last 5:00 of the half to be down just 21-20. After starting the first 17:00 4-20 they made 4 of their last 6 shots. Joseph Yesufu, after being scoreless in the first 17:00 made Drake's last 7 points including an emphatic dunk over a Wichita player then made a 3 with a few seconds left in the half. Wichita missed 9 of their last 10 shots. Hemphill in 8 minutes of play had 3 points and 4 rebounds. Overall Drake is 8-26 overall, 2-8 from 3, with 19 rebounds and 6 turnovers while Wichita was 9-32 overall, 1-9 from 3, with 21 rebounds and just 3 turnovers.

Another slow start to a half as Drake starts the first 4:00 1-6 and is down 31-23 with 15:50 left.

Drake went 7:00 without a point, stuck on a number, and is down 34-25 with 11:56 left. Can't remember the last time Drake, who is the #1 offense in the Valley, had only scored this few a points at this point of a game.

Wichita is letting Drake hang around and now the Bulldogs are down just 42-37 with 7:40 left. Drake has made back to back 3's in the last 1 1/2 minutes to close the gap. Tyson Etienne, the co-palyer of the year in the AAC, scored his first point for Wichita with 8:19 left. He's 0-6 on the night.

WOW! Drake survives and advances to face USC as they beat Wichita State 53-52. The last 5:00 was some good ol NCAA tournament stuff. Darnell Brodie had a really bad game for the 1st 35 minutes on both ends of the court but played great on both ends in the last 5:00 including making a 10 foot turnaround jumper with 1:05 left to give Drake a 51-47 lead. Wichita missed a 3 that Brodie rebounded. Wichita was able to force a turnover, Drake's 12th, and Alterique Gilbert made an acrobatic layup with :28 left to cut the lead to 51-49. Joseph Yesufu made 2 FT's with :22 left to put Drake up 53-49. Drake stole the ball on an inside pass but committed their 13th turnover which the Shockers Dexter Dennis converted into a 3 with 8 seconds left to cut it to 53-52. Yesufu got fouled but missed the front end of a 1 and 1 which Wichita rebounded and gave it Gilbert who quickly brought it up the court and got off a 25 footer that hit the front of the rim and Drake and the Valley rejoiced. Drake had lost their last 11 games games against the Shockers. Believe it or not it was 50 years ago on this day that Drake had won their last NCAA game. For the game Drake shot 20-53 overall, 7-19 from 3. After starting 1-6 in the second half they finished 11-21 overall and after starting the first 28 minutes 2-11 from 3 they finished 5-8. They had 13 assists on their 20 made baskets and outrebounded the Shockers 38-35. Yesufu led Drake with 21 points. Wichita was 19-56 overall, 3-18 from 3 and just 11-22 from the FT line, Drake was 6-10 from their, and had just 7 assists on their 19 made FG's. Morris Udeze made life tough for Brodie as he had 22 points on 8-13 shooting but was 6-11 from the FT line. Tyson Etienne, their leading scorer and co-player of the year in the AAC, had 1 point. When Yesufu missed the FT I was thinking "Oh no not again", as Drake's last NCAA appearance in 2008 ended in heartbreak on a buzzer beater. See ya Shockers!
