  • John Chaney, former Temple coach, dies

Hall of Fame Temple basketball coach John Chaney dies at 89

Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, a zone defense innovator who led Temple to 17 NCAA tournament appearances, has died at the age of 89.
My first BU hoops game was on 12/30/1963. My dad took me to watch the Braves defeat Arizona 67-59. He helped me get Coach Orsborn's autograph before the game.

Here is the career Division I coaching record of John Chaney.

It is quite remarkable how successful he was at Temple from 1982-2002. He was also quite successful at Cheyney State from 1972-1982 before being hired at Temple. His record at Cheyney State was 232–56, which includes one NCAA Division II National Championship in 1978.
He went 516-253 in 24 seasons at Temple, and his overall college coaching record was 748-309. His teams at temple won 8 regular season A-10 championships, 6 A-10 tournament championships, 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, and 5 Elite Eight appearances. His 1987-88 team finished the regular season ranked #1 in the country.

I was surprised to see that he was 89 years old. Tempus fugit.
