A couple other interesting tidbits about Jimmy Collins.... After his playing career at New Mexico State, he was the 11th overall pick in the 1970 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls. He played 2 seasons for the Bulls (and briefly for the Carolina Cougars), then started his coaching career as a greduate-assistant at NM State under Lou Henson, before moving to Illinois with him.
And here is a little known fact... Jimmy Collins applied for the Bradley head coaching job in 2002 after Jim Molinari was let go. He was then selected as one of the 10 finalists and was scheduled for an interview as we're all of the finalists, by the selection committee at the 2002 Final Four weekend in Atlanta. However, he never showed up for the interview, and was eliminated from consideration. He later gave the excuse that he got caught in traffic, but there were reasons that arose that gave doubt to that excuse. In the end, Jim Les was named as Bradley's new head coach.
