3rd year head coach of Chicago State, Lance Irvin, whose team was off to their usual awful start (0-5) playing buy games on the road against much better opponents, was scheduled to play at Loyola tonight. But despite being a game day, he has suddenly announced he is opting out of the rest of the 2020-21 season. There have been some D1 players who have opted out this season because of Covid issues, but this is a first for a D1 head coach.
His assistant Rodell Davis, former an assistant coach at Drake, and Loyola, will take over as interim head coach. He was be on his own tonight against Loyola, since Chicago State could only afford 2 assistant coaches (the NCAA allows 3 assistant coaches), and their only other assistant coach, Tommy Strine, is reportedly on leave to tend to family issues.
It was hoped that Lance Irvin would be able to turn around the fortunes of Chicago State, which is perennially one of the worst D1 programs in the country, but so far that hasn't happened. Despite being located in the middle of one of the most fertile high school talent and recruiting areas of the country, the team consists mostly of low-rated junior college transfers. In their 5 games this season (0-5) they have been outscored by an average of 89-53, and outrebounded 43.4 to 24.8 per game. They rank almost at the bottom of D1 in shooting percentage (33.8%) and three point percentage (25.0%).
