I spoke to a fan of each of the incoming schools to get the dirt on why we should be excited their school is joining the league next year. Here is part two focusing on UIC, featuring UICJohn and Govey23.

Hear about what makes UIC great from the perspective of two die-hard fans. Second in a 3-part series featuring each incoming school.

These are very interesting conversations. Thanks!
Most Murray State and Belmont fans should be excited about joining the MVC. Both programs have terrific teams this year will have a substantial amount of talent returning next season. Those 2 teams should have no problem competing for the upper half of the 2022-23 MVC, or better.

But I am glad to see that UIC fans have some encouragement about joining the MVC. And I hope they do get their better players to return next year, but there is no guarantee that will happen, since 2 of their top 4 players don't have any eligibility left, and the other 2 are eligible to leave as grad-transfers after this season. It is possible they could have only players returning next season who averaged about 6 points or less.
Franklin, their top scorer and best player, spent 2 years at a junior college, then one each at Tennessee Tech and now UIC. So he will be a 5th year player next season, and there is no guarantee he won't leave as a grad-transfer. Their 2nd leading scorer Kevin Johnson is already a 5th year grad-transfer, so he isn't eligible to return. Like Franklin, 3rd leading scorer Zion Griffin will also be a 5th year player next season and eligible to transfer and play right away somewhere else as a grad-transfer. And 4th leading scorer Jalen Warren is also in his final season of eligibility. So we wish them good luck, but, IMO they will really struggle playing in the MVC next season.

Can you still transfer as a grad transfer without sitting out a year if you have already transferred without having to sit out ? I thought the NCAA rule took the ability for a grad to transfer without sitting out a year away if they already had done so.

Yeah, it gets confusing. From what I can find, the grad-transfer rule, which has been around for a while, is still in effect. It allows a player who has graduated, is in good academic standing, and still has eligibility remaining, to transfer to another school to pursue post-graduate courses as long as the curriculum they want to study is not offered at his present school. And yes, the grad-transfer has immediate eligibility and does not have to sit out a year. The grad-transfer rule applies even if the grad-transfer has transferred before, as long as they haven't used up their eligibility.

But there is now a new rule that applies to all student-athletes, including undergraduates-
Last year's new NCAA rule allowed all athletes in every sport to transfer one time without sitting out a year. It was made a permanent rule on April 28, 2021, and took effect for the 2021-22 academic year.-
But, this rule applies only to players "who have not transferred in the past".
            https://www.ncaa.org/news/2021/4/28/...inability.aspx (see second section)

Here is the text of the NCAA press release from 4/28/21-

            Transfers

The Division I Board of Directors ratified the adoption of legislation expanding the one-time transfer exception to all student-athletes, no matter what sport they play. The Division I Council adopted the legislation, which allows all student-athletes who have not transferred in the past the opportunity to compete immediately after transfer once in their period of eligibility.

The rule is now effective and applies to all student-athletes who want to transfer for the first time for the 2021-22 academic year. If a student has previously transferred, the waiver process is available.

That question #13 does confirm that post-graduate transfers would have to sit out if they had previously transferred, though they could submit a waiver request.
I didn't think that was part of the older grad-transfer rule, but I looked it up, and it was a requirement for that previous grad-transfer rule, too. So it was always the case that the grad-transfer rule only applied to student-athletes who graduated and had never transferred before. Sorry, I was not correct in my last post.

Yeah, UIC is defintely going to be a project no doubt. However, if Belmont and Murray can keep their guys, they will be two of the favorites next season. Hopefully the top end squads do more good than UIC does harm.

I do have faith over the long run that UIC will become at least a mid-tier MVC team. But yeah, probably not next season.

Today I posted the last of my three-part series covering each of the incoming schools from their fans' perspective. Belmont is featured, as two Bruins fans tell all.

My next project will be updated power rankings, which I haven't done in over two weeks. You can also follow me on Twitter @BeatMVC if you're so inclined.

A couple questions I hope you can answer about Belmont-
                        1) Is there any Belmont fan message board? The only one I can find is this old OVC aggregate message board that Belmont fans used, but it has been defunct for the last 5 years-

For the record, Murray State has a very active fan message forum for basketball- https://www.racerfans.com/board/viewforum.php?f=3
And even UIC has a dedicated fan forum for basketball, though not quite as active as Murray State- https://uicflames.proboards.com/boar...ops-discussion

                        2) And, for such an incredibly successful and entertaining basketball program with passionate fans, a beautiful, modern 5,000 seat campus arena, and located in a city with a metropolitan population of nearly 2 million people, why is the average attendance at Belmont only 1,860?

By the way, Nashville's metro population of 1.99 million people is much larger than any current MVC city, except Chicago, and even much larger than Omaha or Wichita.
Loyola, of course, has the largest metro population of any school (Chicago- 9.6 million), but it doesn't help their attendance much, or incoming UIC's. Though both Loyola and UIC average more than Belmont.
Other Metro populations of MVC schools-
                        Des Moines, IA- 699K
                        Springfield, MO- 462K
                        Peoria, IL- 374K
                        Evansville, IN- 350K
                        Bloomington/Normal- 190K
                        Terre Haute, IN- 170K
                        Cedar Falls/Waterloo, IA- 170K
                        Carbondale, IL- 135K

1-I have thoroughly looked and asked around and while I have found several individual Belmont fans on Twitter, I have come to the conclusion that they do not have a board. And yes, that would make them the only Valley school that does not have a board.

2-Belmont does not seem to get a lot of attention in Nashville. The folks I have spoken to have said the following. 1-Thier graduating classes used to be much smaller, so there aren't that many Belmont alums out there. 2-Belmont is a national university and lots of their alums don't stay in Nashville so they are cheering from afar. I would guess there is some truth to this. You see a similar thing with Northwestern and Chicago. They don't draw great but when they go to a bowl game on the east/west coast they usually sell a lot of tickets. The other problem they won't talk about is that they just don't seem to have made a huge impact in the city. That isn't a huge deal when you have the success they've had. But if they lose that momentum it might be hard to get it back if they don't have a big fanbase supporting them.

Nice job. I agree with your picks for every category. I don't expect much argument about the awards this year. Preseason POY A.J. Green will get some votes, but IMO Mosley should win POY.
One thing.... You listed Simon Wilbar of Indiana State among the top freshmen, but he is not really a freshman. He played a season at Lincoln Memorial University last year for Josh Schertz.
                                https://lmurailsplitters.com/sports/...on-wilbar/4832

Indiana State lists him as a Redshirt Freshman, but it's because they subtracted a year because of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA.
