  • 2020 NBA Draft

The 2020 NBA Draft was Wednesday, Nov. 18. It was originally planned for June, but was pushed back because Cobid interrupted the 2020 NBA season, and the restart didn't end until about a month ago. Here are the draft results.

There were no Missouri Valley players drafted, and nobody expected there would be. The 1st team All-MVC this past year consisted entirely of underclassmen, none of whom were draft eligible-

And, of the 2nd team All-MVC, only Darrell Brown and Keandre Cook were draft eligible.
Darrell Brown has signed with a pro agent (Rize Management) and is still looking for a pro deal overseas or in the G-League (if they play this season). Good luck DB!

Missouri State's Keandre Cook just signed a free agent deal with the Charlotte Hornets-

Good luck to him. His chances of making the NBA team are slim. But, hopefully, he can get some exposure in the preseason, or in the G-League.

    Some NBA/MVC trivia-

Bradley has had 21 former players in the NBA or the old ABA (which merged with the NBA in 1976). The last Bradley player in the NBA was Walt Lemon, who last played for the Chicago Bulls in 2019. And Bradley has one of the only two Hall of Famers to play in the MVC for current MVC teams- Chet Walker. Larry Bird is the other.

Bradley's 21 NBA'ers is by far the most for any current MVC team. Here are the NBA players from the other current MVC teams.

Drake has had 14, the last was Lewis Lloyd in 1990-

Evansville has had 5 play in the NBA. They had one Hall of Famer, Jerry Sloan, but he never played in the MVC. Sloan played when Evansville was considered "small school" (now called Division II) and well before UE joined the MVC in 1994-

Illinois State has had 5 NBA'ers. Doug Collins is also in the Hall of Fame, but he also never played in the MVC. He played for ILSU from 1970-1973, before they joined the MVC in 1981.

Indiana State has had a surprising number- 10 NBA'ers. Most were in the 1940s and 1950s. And they had the other Hall of Famer from the MVC, Larry Bird-

Loyola has had 16 NBA players. The most recent was Milton Doyle, who played in 10 NBA games in 2018-

Loyola's LaRue Martin in 1972 was the #1 overall NBA draft pick. The only other overall #1 picks among current MVC teams were ISU's Doug Collins in 1972 and Gene Melchiorre of Bradley in 1951, however, Melchiorre did not play in the NBA. However, he is the only one of these three #1 overall NBA Draft picks who played in the MVC. Martin and Collins played before their teams became members of the MVC.

Missouri State has had only 1 NBA player, Alize Johnson- He is the only former MVC player who was still under contract with an NBA team in the 2020 season. He played for the Indiana Pacers in 2020, but spent most of the season in the G-League. He is also the most recent MVC player drafted (2018 2nd round). His initial 2-year contract with the Pacers expired after this past season, and his current status is unknown.

Northern Iowa- NONE, although UNI does have the only former player (that I know of- there could be others) to win the NBA Championship as a head coach, Nick Nurse, who won the 2019 NBA title with the Toronto Raptors. He played for UNI from 1985-1989, just before UNI joined the MVC in 1991..

Southern Illinois has had 10 NBA'ers, including the other Hall of Famer, Walt Frazier, though Frazier played at SIU from 1963-1967, before they joined the MVC in 1975.

Valparaiso has had 7 NBA'ers, including one-time Bradley recruit Alec Peters, who was a 2nd round draft pick in 2017. Peters played for Valpo before they joined the MVC. Valpo also has the only other former player who was still on an active roster as of 2020- Ryan Broekhoff. However, he never played in the MVC. He played at Valpo from 2009-2013, before they joined the MVC in 2017. He played for the Dallas Mavericks in 2020, was waived in February, 2020, signed a contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in June, 2020, but never played for them.

Forgot to mention at least one, actually he is the father of current Cleveland guard Darius Garland, the great Winston Garland, however Southwest Missouri State wasn’t in the MVC when he played.

Thanks, I knew there was probably a name or two I missed.
The source I used mentions only Alize Johnson and does not mention Winston Garland-

However, Garland did play 2 years at Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State), and was a 2nd round draft pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1987.

He played from 1985-1987 at SW Missouri State. They did not enter the MVC until 1990.

That looks like it could be a list of players drafted, not players who ever played in the NBA. It omits several who have played in the last 20-25 years like Chris Carr, Ashraf Amaya, Troy Hudson, and Anronio Harvey. Plus there are least 10 on that list (Gary Wilson, Milt Huggins, Greg Starrick, Bruce Butchko, George McNeil, Joe Ramsey, Quentin Stinson, Rod Camp, Wayne Abrams, Ken Perry) who never played a second in the NBA
