  • Another black eye for Kansas and Bill Self

KU coach Bill Self responds after charge filed against player who recently left team

Notice how the writer tries to help Kansas out a little by phrasing the headline as if the Kansas player got into trouble after he left Kansas?
Not true. The incident was actually early in the AM on January 1, when he was playing basketball for Kansas.
The Kansas player Silvio De Souza has a history of problems. He was suspended for 2 seasons because the NCAA declared him ineligible for receiving payments from Adidas. Kansas appealed, and he only had to sit out 1 year. Then this past season he was suspended for a fight in a game against Kansas State because he threw punches, and held a stool over his head and appeared ready to strike someone with it.
But the charges now are for allegedly punching a man in a bar early (2:36 am) on New Year's Day that required hospitalization and medical care. Oddly, the Lawrence police took 10½ months to decide to press charges, allowing De Souza to continue playing last season. When De Souza was notified of the charges on Oct. 16, he and Bill Self met and Self advised De Souza to leave Kansas. The incident and the charges were never made public until today when Bill Self announced that De Souza had been charged with a felony "earlier this fall" (the charges were actually12 days ago) and that he was opting out of 2020-21.

Wasn't De Souza the guy that stomped on a player in the tournament a couple years ago?

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

I agree, and therefore I don't think he sees it as a black eye, but more the cost of doing business or collateral damage. The primary things for him is getting talent and winning, so rule or laws being broken are just part of the game.

I can't find that De Silva has been in any other fights other than the one in January of this past season against Kansas State.
For those that didn't see it, here are a few photos. De Souza is #22--

Ah, you're right. That's what I was thinking of. Thanks Coach!
