We've mentioned this a few times before, but here is a Joe Henricksen/Chicago Sun Times article about how there is an increasing trend of college coaches offering kids scholarships just to string them along, or to get in early, or to keep them from committing elsewhere, but it's not really a solid offer. If the kid calls to commit, they find out it wasn't a real offer. Instead, they get excuses, or is told to wait a while, or other alternatives are presented to them.

For the record, Bradley coaches do not operate that way. They hand out only a few offers, and pretty much only to recruits who visit the campus (Ville was a rare exception).
