    NCAA expected to deliver formal allegations to University of Arizona stemming from FBI investigation

    Of the dozen schools implicated in the federal investigation of pay-for-play recruiting violations, the case against Arizona is believed to be perhaps the strongest. Former Assistant Coach Emmanuel "Book" Richardson has already plead guilty to accepting $20,000 in bribes in exchange for steering Arizona players to aspiring agent Christian Dawkins and financial manager Munish Sood. In addition, Richardson spent three months in federal prison. Federal wiretap transcripts that were released show Richardson was involved in multiple cash payments to players, as well as other violations, including academic fraud. There is also wiretap evidence that at least 2 other Arizona assistant coaches (former Drake head coach Mark Phelps and Joe Pasternack) were involved in the payouts, and the recordings suggest head coach Sean Miller not only knew about them, but was personally involved in delivering some of the cash.

    I guess we'll see just how serious the NCAA is about these kinds of massive cheating scandals.

    Arizona gets hit hard by the NCAA- 9 allegations of misconduct, five of which are classified as Level I violations.
    The Level I allegations, which are the most serious category and usually draw the most severe penalties, include a lack of institutional control and failure to monitor by the university; a lack of head coach control by men’s basketball coach Sean Miller; and a lack of head coach control by Augie Busch, the women’s swimming and diving coach.

    Of course, they will deny all of this, but this NCAA's case is a bit different than usual. Most NCAA cases are based mostly on "he said, she said" claims from former players or recruits, and it can be hard to prove who is telling the truth. The NCAA has no authority to subpoena or pursue testimony under oath.

      Arizona initially denied the charges against them by the NCAA, but today they admitted to guilt, and self-imposed a 1-year postseason ban to try to get out ahead of the forthcoming penalties from the NCAA

      For Arizona's involvement in the pay-for-play scandal and lack of institutional control, the penalties should be much harsher than a single one-year post-season ban, IMO. But we'll see if the NCAA goes easy on one of their BCS boys.

        Self-imposed ban for 1 year during the lockdown season, please. I hope they throw the book at these guys.

              The NCAA needs to send a message that they won’t accept postseason bans after the season begins, that teams who attempt this aren’t helping their own cause.
