  • St. Thomas jumping to D1

Sounds like St. Thomas may be jumping from D3 to D1 and joining the Summit conference.

Thomas has won 34 conference regular-season and 13 conference playoff titles. St. Thomas has reached the MIAC playoffs 33 times in the 36-year history of the format, and its all-time record in the event is 37-20, including a 34-10 on-campus record.
The NCAA will establish a pathway for DIII schools to jump all the to D1. Are there schools that could actually take it?

    Thanks for posting, Tommy.

St. Thomas is a private Catholic D3 University in St. Paul, Minnesota. We had a post last fall about how they have dominated their Division III conference in Minnesota for many years in multiple sports, and the conference, the MIAC (Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), essentially kicked them out because they won too much.
We had this story on Bradleyfans a few months ago- St. Thomas wins too much, kicked out of MIAC https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/26801838/st-thomas-wins-too-much-kicked-miac Division III University of St. Thomas, a private Catholic university in St. Paul, Minnesota (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_St.

So instead of looking for another D3 conference, they decided to apply to transition to Division I, something that no Division III school had done before. The Summit League has already said they will accept them if they successfully transition to Division I.

NCAA rules specify that a D-III school must first stop at Division II before climbing to D-I, a process that normally takes 12 years. St. Thomas said if its waiver is approved, it will join the Summit League in 2021, which is exactly when the Tommies must exit the MIAC.

Now it appears that the NCAA “would be receptive to a formal waiver request" from St. Thomas to move directly to Division I.

Wow! Pretty intriguing. Hope they get the waiver.

The University of St. Thomas receives NCAA waiver to join The Summit League in 2021-22
                    https://thesummitleague.org/news/202...n-2020-21.aspx

Their football program will join the Pioneer League, since the Summit does not sponsor football.
