Currently, the Pac-12 consists of only 2 schools- Oregon State and Washington State. Every other school left and moved to either the Big 12 (Utah, Arizona, AZ State, Colorado), the Big Ten (Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA), or the ACC (Cal, Stanford).

However, the Pac-12 will be adding four new schools from the Mountain West Conference in 2026- Boise State University, Colorado State University, Fresno State University, and San Diego State University. They will likely continue to try to attract other new members.
But you are right, that it will not regain the prestige and level of competition it had prior to this year.

Do you think the MVC is insulated geographicly from the fate that effectively killed the MWC?

Nope, even mediocre football schools are being poached (eg- Missouri State)

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes said the newly rebuilt Pac-12 will look to add at least two more schools for 2026 as quickly as possible.
My first BU hoops game was on 12/30/1963. My dad took me to watch the Braves defeat Arizona 67-59. He helped me get Coach Orsborn's autograph before the game.

Air Force has emerged as a serious target to be added to the American Athletic Conference, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel on Monday, after the program emerged as a potential AAC add prior to the Pac-12 taking four Mountain West schools last week.

I hope they only add "State" schools. It would make it easier to remember who is in the conference.

Gonzaga to the PAC-? despite not having a football team:
Gonzaga leaving West Coast Conference to join Pac-12, source told
@ActionNetworkHQ. Pac-12 still needs minimum of two football members by 2026, but Gonzaga, even w/out a football team, will receive a full conference revenue share in Pac-12, source said

Just as UNLV and Air Force decided to stay in the Mountain West Conference, Utah State surprises everyone and joins the new Pac-12. - https://x.com/YahooSports/status/1838373121340104727

That puts the Pac-12 now at 7 members. Will UNLV and Air Force now reverse gears and leave the MWC?

More potential movement due to the domino effect in the Mountain West. The MWC interested in the top 2 football schools in the MAC- Northern Illinois and Toledo for football only (for now)- https://x.com/Brett_McMurphy/status/1839466606831063438

If the MWC added these two, it would spread itself over all 4 continental US Time Zones, plus the Hawaiian Time Zone.

                    • The money would have to be pretty great for NIU to join. They’d be going from a regional bus league to flights everywhere.

The MAC doesn’t have a large buyout or grant of rights. The MWC is flush with cash now due to the payments by the schools who’ve left, and it has a much better media deal than the MAC but that should be substantially watered down when it comes time to renegotiate.

Then there’s the question of what to do with their other sports. The MVC doesn’t need a basketball drag so they’d be hoping for the Horizon.

                      • If it came down to NIU's and Toledo's hoops teams going somewhere, I believe Toledo would be welcome in several mid-major conferences (how about in the MVC replacing Missouri State?), but NIU has been so embarrassingly bad for much of the past 50 years, with barely 1000 people in attendance at home games (usually less), that they would have to do a really major overhaul. They've not been much better than Chicago State in some seasons.

The MVC would welcome Toledo. But the fact that they play FBS football would keep them from moving from the MAC to the MVC. FBS football, even at the MAC level, is too profitable for them to give up.

                          • FWIW- numbers published put Bradley's athletic revenue at under $20 million
Toledo's athletic revenue is close to $40 million but $9 million of that reportedly comes from "student fees"
assessed to their students (about $650 per student), but they get free admission to all sporting events, including football.

There are reports circulating that NIU has interest from both the Mountain West and Big 12 for potential expansion
