  • Top 10 Best MVC Coaches since 2000

Website ranks the Top 10 best MVC coaches since 2000-
    https://bustingbrackets.com/2020/06/...ntury-2000-20/

They have a little info about each coach, but for those who would rather just see a list-
    10) Jim Les- Bradley (2002-2011)
    9) Brian Wardle- Bradley (2015-2020)
    8 )Chris Lowery- SIU (2004-2012)
    7) Mark Turgeon- Wichita State (2000-2007)
    6) Bruce Weber- SIU (2000-2003)
    5) Ben Jacobson- UNI (2006-2020)
    4) Porter Moser- Illinois State (2003-2007) and Loyola (2013-2020)
    3) Greg McDermott- UNI (2001-2006) and Creighton (2010-2013)
    2) Dana Altman- Creighton (2000-2010)
    1) Gregg Marshall- Wichita State (2007-2017)

Nice to see 2 Bradley coaches on the Top 10 list, including Coach Wardle, who is still early in his career at Bradley.
It's hard to argue with the list, but 2 things that might be argued-
Chris Lowery did have 3 good years in his first 3 seasons after taking over in 2004 for Matt Painter (and previously Bruce Weber). He averaged 26 wins per year those first 3 seasons mainly with the players Weber & Painter recruited. His 4th season was slightly better than mediocre (18-15), but when he finally had to coach with his own recruits, his last 4 seasons were abysmal (averaged just 6 MVC wins per year over final 4 years.-

My other issue is with Porter Moser. He has had a nice 3-year run, and his recent success and his 2018 Final Four makes him deserving of being on the list, But, he was terrible his first 4 seasons in the MVC at Loyola. And the article also lists his 4 seasons at ISU (2003-2007) which were an utter failure. He was 51-67 overall at ISU, and 22-50 in the MVC while there. He never came close to a winning season in the MVC while at ISU. Even with his success in these last 3 seasons, his overall MVC record is only 89-109 (0.449).

Surprised to see Barry Hinson not make it. In that period of time he had 262 wins with a .553 winning percentage. 8 of his 15 years he had a top 4 or higher team in the conference. However, he did never make the NCAA tournament due to a major slight.

Yes, good point. Here is Barry Hinson's career record at Southwest Missouri State/Missouri State and at SIU-

Probably his failure to win either the regular season or the MVC Tournament, or make it to the NCAA Tournament is what kept him off the list.
He should have made the NCAA Tournament in 2006, and his team's RPI of 21 is still by far the best RPI not to get an at large bid.

        Dick Versace, anyone?
        Larry Bird
I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Definitely agree with you on that one Tommy! Versace went from last to first in his second year and in 1985-86 season won 32 games..

                Every time I see Dick’s name, I think 32-3.

I don't read so well! Now that list makes a lot more sense!

Let's be real, though. If BW sticks around, he'll be no. 1 in 2-3 years!

I feel that Turgeon and Marshall shouldn't be that far apart in the rankings. Turgeon brought Wichita to the next level, and arguably Marshall did too after taking over. I have a lot more respect for Turgeon, and loved that WSU and BU made it to the Sweet 16 together in '06.

I'd replace Lowery with Weber. Lowery did a crappy job for half those seasons IMO.
