  • Wes Unseld dies

Anyone old enough to remember when Wes Unseld and Louisville steamrolled over all the other teams in the MVC?

Wes Unseld, the Hall of Famer who led the then-Washington Bullets to the franchise’s only NBA championship, died Tuesday morning, his family said in a statement. He was 74.
My first BU hoops game was on 12/30/1963. My dad took me to watch the Braves defeat Arizona 67-59. He helped me get Coach Orsborn's autograph before the game.

Yes, a lot of younger fans never got to see the great Wes Unseld play. He was considered the greatest player ever to play for Louisville, and one of the greatest college players of all time.
He was also a terrific NBA player who played his entire 13-year pro career for the Baltimore/Washington Bullets (now the Washington Wizards). But, because he was only 6'7" and played center in the same era as much bigger centers like Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton, Moses Malone, Willis Reed, Artis Gilmore, Bob Lanier, Jack Sikma, and others, he never quite got the recognition as a pro that he deserved. I watched him at the Fieldhouse for Louisville vs. Bradley. He played for Louisville from 1965-1968, the same three seasons that Joe Allen played center for Bradley (players weren't eligible as freshmen in those years). They had some epic battles.
Here are Wes Unseld's stats for his 3 seasons at Louisville. He averaged almost 19 rebounds per game for his collegiate career, as well as averaging over 20 points per game in his career.-

      And his NBA stats-

Louisville had great teams in that era, and they were loaded with talent in addition to Unseld.
Bradley was 2-4 against Louisville in those three seasons.
      1/15/66 at Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse - Bradley 79 - Louisville 62
      1/29/66 at Freedom Hall, Louisville - Louisville 103 (H) - Bradley 71
      1/14/67 at Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse - #4 Louisville 103 - Bradley 74
      1/28/67 at Freedom Hall, Louisville - #3 Louisville 81 - Bradley 68
      1/13/68 at Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse - Bradley 70 - Louisville 68
      1/27/68 at Freedom Hall, Louisville - Louisville 77 - Bradley 75

Bradley Hall of Famer Joe Allen averaged 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in six career matchups against Wes Unseld.
