  • Veteran honoring at game

Coach - I know I asked you about this last season, but I can't remember so hoping you or someone else can help me figure this out. I've got a brother that is a Vietnam vet. He was in the infantry and got a purple heart when a guy in front of him stepped on a land mine and he got the secondary burst from it, losing a kidney in the process. Guy has a scar all the way up both sides of his body, and only by the grace of God did he live. My mom says she prayed for him all day, every day when he was there, and my brothers account of the story is that he was walking around holding his intestines in his arms crying for mom. Pretty horrific story, but really glad he made it back and I love the guy to death and wanted to share it with my BU forum family.

Anyhow, I love my brother and really appreciate when they honor the veterans and I'd love to see him get recognized at a game. He's a huge BU fan and I think he'd get a kick out of it so hoping I can get some insight into how to sign him up for it. Hoping we have a basketball season for him to be able to do it!

I may be wrong but seems like all the guys that were honored are all connected to Caterpillar in some way

Call Chris Reynold's office at Bradley. If you can't get a hold of him, let me know and I will help you

Naw. Caterpillar is the sponsor of the segment... they aren’t all Cat guys.

Tommy, the other guy to try to reach is Brad Mitchell, the Deputy Director of Athletics. I believe he is also involved in game management.
                    He can be reached at:

In January 2018 I nominated by 94 year old father-in-law for this honor. He will be 97 this summer and he’s still going strong!!

Karla Bothast from Bradley told me “Bradley Athletics does not decide who is chosen to be recognized. That decision is made externally by three different organizations – Greater Peoria Honor Flight, US Army Reserves and the 182nd Air Force Reserves.”

I sent a message to the GPHF and they were very helpful explaining the selection process. Send an email to: business@gphonorflight.org

Tommy, if I was to do it all over again I would attempt to contact all three organizations to increase the odds of being selected.

Many thanks to Karla and the folks at GPHF for everything they did to make it possible for my father-in-law to experience the recognition at the Bradley game. The crowd's recognition was outstanding and greatly appreciated! We had over 20 family members at the game that night and it was an experience we will never forget!

I sent an e-mail off to the GPHF, so hopefully they'll get my bro at center court one day. Thanks for the tips, even though I'm a few years late on this.
