  • Michael Jordan

Interesting article in the paper today about Michael Jordan. I still have the ticket stub from that game. Peoria’s A.J. Guyton played in that game also for Indiana.
What part of illegal don't you understand?

I watched the first 2 episodes of "The Last Dance", the ESPN documentary miniseries about Michael Jordan and the 1997-98 Bulls. That was their final championship season and the last season that the core of the Bulls were together. It was Jordan's final season with the Bulls. He retired after that 1997-98 season, though he did return after missing 3 seasons to play 2 more years with the Washington Wizards. Scottie Pippin was traded to the Houston Rockets, and Dennis Rodman was released a few months after that season. After that 1997-98 team was broken up, the Bulls won only 13 games the next season, finished dead last the next 4 seasons, did not return to the playoffs for 7 years, and haven't come close to another championship since.
There are 10 episodes total, and I think they will continue to air 2 episodes each Sunday.

How many watched it? They briefly covered that first preseason game in Jordan's rookie year in Jordan's rookie year in Peoria at Carver Arena. It was the first pro game he ever played. They focused mostly on the activities in the team hotel (drugs, alcohol, girls), which I am guessing was the Pere Marquette, though they never named the hotel.

Overall, I thought the documentary was well done, but as a long-time Bulls fan, almost nothing was new to me. I had seen all the games of that era, and seen all the highlights before. And just about everything else has been documented in previous books and coverage of the team. But I'll probably watch the next episodes.

Does everyone remember the Bull's preseason game in Peoria in 1995? Rodman joined the team and it was entertaining. There was a big crowd with a lot of noise, but I can't remember who the Bulls played that day?

I lost all respect for Pippen when he refused to come off the bench after he was taken out.

That was against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Oct. 13, 1995-
Cleveland Cavaliers coach Mike Fratello first heard the news while watching TV. San Antonio had traded Dennis Rodman to the Bulls. The NBA’s top rebounder was back in the Eastern Conference, …

I enjoyed watching the first two episodes and plan on watching all of the remaining episodes. A lot of the documentary was new for me and I look forward to learning more about Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

Well with the lack of any live sports now, this I have looked forward to for some time, and I've enjoyed it so far!
Some things are new to me. I'm not a big NBA fan and missed a lot of Jordan games because of that, though I think I've seen every great game highlight he's ever had. I watched a lot of MJ highlights this time last year after our Braves' season ended.

I remember being at his preseason game his rookie year. If I remember correctly there didn’t seem to be a very large crowd for that game..I was also at Hawkins rookie year preseason game at Carver also and what I remember it was a great crowd for it..

Jim Mattson of WEEK TV had a nice story on the WEEK News tonight about a Peorian who played 3 seasons in the NBA and has unique connections to Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and even Michael Jordan-
                  https://week.com/2020/05/26/who-wore...SafIV4.twitter

Oliver (Ollie) Mack is a long-time Peorian, though he grew up in New York City. He was a star in high school and college at East Carolina. He was a 2nd round draft pick (#25 overall) in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He played part of his rookie season with the Lakers, alongside another rookie, Magic Johnson and several other NBA greats, including future Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes, and Spencer Haywood. He was traded to the Chicago Bulls in the middle of the 1979-80 season. The following season he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, where he played through the 1981-82 season. His partial seasons with the Bulls in 1979-80 and early in 1980-81 were 3 to 4 years before Michael Jordan joined the Bulls, but Mack happened to be the last Bulls player to wear #23 before Jordan chose to wear it when he started his NBA career in 1984.

He now works for the Peoria County Regional Office of Education as the Director of Project T.A.R.G.E.T., which works to prevent truancy and dropouts, and works with students who have school attendance problems.

Regarding the 10-episode ESPN documentary series last year about Michael Jordan called "The Last Dance", one criticism that arose was why it seemed to feature nearly every other player on those championship teams with Jordan, Pippin, etc, including the bench players who didn't play much. But for some unexplained reason, nowhere in the 10 episodes was one of the starters, on all 3 of the championship teams of 1996, 1997, and 1998, Luc Longley, ever mentioned. Longley was the first Australian player to play in the NBA and he was a key part of the second "threepeat" from 1996-1998. He was the only other player who started every single game (except for games missed due to injury) on the 1996, 1997, and 1998 NBA Championship teams along with Jordan and Pippin, yet he never appeared in any of the 10 "Last Dance" episodes.
Recently, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation decided to do their own documentary about Longley, and many of the Bulls stars such as Pippin, Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, and others, including Michael Jordan were willing to participate in the project. When asked about Longley's absence from "The Last Dance", Jordan even said:
"If you asked me to do it all over again there's no way I'd leave Luc Longley off my team, no way possible."
                    https://twitter.com/AustralianStory/...51454975488005

Story of how the Luc Longley documentary, "Luc Longley: One Giant Leap", came together-

I'm watching the Luc Longley documentary, which was broadcast in Australia, but is now also available on YouTube. It's pretty interesting. If anyone here is a Bulls fan, especially from the 1990's, or is looking for interesting basketball stuff to watch, you will enjoy this.
