  • New Matt Roth thread

Matt Roth attended an "Elite Camp" on the campus of Indiana Saturday. They invited many of the kids they are recruiting for 2008 and 2009, and use the camp as a recruiting tool. Insiders at IU had expected to receive a verbal commitment from Roth at the camp, but reports from late last night were that he had not commtted. The IU fans were resigned that he might keep to his recently stated plan to wait a couple weeks then commit in September.

    One report said--
"still think he (Roth) is likely to be a Hoosier but nothing is certain".

Not to hijack this thread completely, but as discussed earlier, a midnight madness or some type of big bash with the students, fans, and former players would be a great recruiting tool for the basketball program and would provide a way to get some recruits to make an unofficial visit here.

A midnight madness would be great but how many would attend? Could we get 9000 fans to the CC for this event? I would seriously doubt it as we already have half the people sleeeping for a 7 PM starting time, so by midnight they wouldn't even find the place. When you talk of a MM event you better be able to fill your main venue to capacity if you plan on bringing in recruits and impressing them. I know people that have gone to KU for their's and had a full arena/ standing room only, now that would be impressive to bring a recruit to. On the other hand to bring a recruit to an event at the FH (no respect to a great palce) and only have 1-2000 people would not impress any recruit and could hurt more then help. The idea behind a MM is to impress the recruits even more then the fans.

If it was promoted well and held at the Civic Center, I think there could be 4-5000+. But the cost to Bradley would be prohibitive. So I don't see it ever happening at Carver.

But they could never get more than about 1500 at the fieldhouse. Unfortunately, fans just didn't want to go there anymore. The parking was inadequate, the area scares a lot of people, concessions and facilities just weren't adequate for the fans.

So I don't expect there to be a MM this year, but maybe once the new facility is finished, it could work.

          Is MR a Cubs fan?

I thought it almost strange (I never recall hearing a SLU ad. before) that SLU had a basic radio ad. during the Cubs radio broadcast (at leas on 1290AM) on Saturday...
The ad just said, St. Louis is not just home of the Cards, It's also home to SLU... No mention of athletics, of course.

It would probaby be best if this was done when the new facilities are complete... But even then I was thinking that BU could do a cook out type of bash out on the quad with some live bands on a Saturday afternoon and then have everyone move in to the facilities for a red-white type of scrimmage along with a program involving former players... If promoted correctly with a couple of sponsors, I could see this being a great time for students, area fans and alumni, as well as a great opportunity to get unofficial visits from potential recruits.

My largest fear with a midnight madness is if no one showed up. BU's base is not likely to stay awake until past 130am. Mo did that many years ago and it was a joke.

This would have to be done in the Civic Center, not at the fieldhouse. Though the fieldhouse is a great place, its not what I would believe BU would like to show off to potential recruits.

I would like this to be done but it really should be done correctly. I would rather not do a midnight madness then rush into it and have it not be received.

Jim Mattson just reported on his 6 p.m. broadcast that Roth has eliminated SLU and is now down to BU and Indiana. Haven't heard anything about this on here yet.

Matt Roth's Final 2- Bradley and Indiana

Washington high hoops star Matt Roth has narrowed his college choice to two finalists- Bradley and Indiana. Roth today informed St Louis University that he has eliminated them from his college decision. Roth visited the Bradley campus last Thursday and traveled to Indiana University on Saturday. Washington coach Kevin Brown tells HOI-19 Sports that Roth expects to make a final decision soon- "It will be this week, probably Thursday or Friday," Brown said.

Thanks for the link. I have always thought that between BU and SLU, that BU would win that one. Now we have to beat out IU!

Indiana fans seem to be pretty confident they will win over Bradley--

I know he is serious about basketball and will be on a basketball scholarship, but Matt seems like a really bright guy. I think he is interested in business and wonder how much academics will play in his decision. There is no doubt that IU has excellent business graduate programs. However, there is also no comparison between the undergraduate education at Bradley University and that at IU. Matt can be in classes with real professors and 20 or 30 students at BU, or classes all taught by graduate assistants with 200 or 300 students at IU. I bet that plays a role in the end.

Personally, I would also weigh the fact that my parents could see me play. I bet ?‚?? of Bradley???‚¬?„?s road games are closer than IU???‚¬?„?s home games!

Finally, the style Jim Les is playing seems ideally suited for Matt???‚¬?„?s game. It would really showcase his strengths.

Regardless of the decision, I wish Matt the best and hope everything works out well for him.

All the comments I saw on the Billiken board were very nice and complimentary and wished Matt well.
Not so on the IU boards, as they seem almost miffed Roth would hold Bradley as one of his final two along with Indiana.
They almost seem insulted to be in the same sentence with BU.

"I don't care if he comes to IU or not"
" I am just saying he isnt really on my wish list and i wont be checking the boards every day for his status"
"I am hardly scared of losing him to Bradley. SLU was definently our main competition, and now that they are gone this should be an easy choice. I highly doubt he would start at Bradley anyhow, but he would also probably get more minutes than he would at IU"
