  • MVC transfers and players lost

Missouri State loses several key seniors- Keandre Cook, Tulio Da Silva, Lamont West, Ross Owens, and Kabir Mohammad. That is more than 60% of their scoring from this past year. Plus there have been rumors of multiple other players looking to transfer.

Today, the first transfer was announced- 6'7" redshirt-junior Josh Hall, a part-time starter who averaged 5.2 ppg & 4.1 rpg, announced he had entered his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. He will be a grad-transfer who will be eligible immediately with 1 year left to play. Hall had 17 points and 9 rebounds against Bradley in the game Feb. 19 in Peoria.

Is it official that both Aaron Cook and Tremell Murphy are returning from their redshirts next year?

When injuries occur during the course of a season, the school doesn't apply for a medical redshirt until after the season ends, since one criteria is that the player cannot compete in a game after the midway point of the season. I have talked to the Bradley team doctor in the past about what it involves. It is fairIy complicated and involves sending in detailed medical records, reports, Xrays, and doctors' letters. I am pretty sure both SIU and Drake have done or will do that for Cook and Murphy, but it will take a little time to get the final word from the NCAA. But there is no reason that it won't happen for both.

Btw, I happened to sit behind the family of Tremell and Anthony Murphy during the Friday March 6 afternoon session when Drake beat UNI and the Bradley-SIU game was next. I could tell they were Drake fans, but didn't realize they were the Murphy's family until Tremell came up and sat with them after the Drake-UNI game was over. I congratulated him and asked him if he was returning next year. He said "for sure".

The top conference teams have plenty of good players coming back. Off the top of my head, Bradley will be hard pressed to win again next year. Hope I am wrong.

Another SIU player enters the Transfer Portal- Harwin Francois, a junior college player who came to SIU last spring as a late recruit for Bryan Mullins and had 3 years of eligibility left. He averaged 4.2 ppg, but was one of their better 3-point shooters off the bench at 37.8%. Only Marcus Domask who shot 39.7% had a better 3-point FG% for SIU, which finished 9th out of the 10 MVC teams in 3-point FG%. He has 2 years of eligibility left

Another SIU player is leaving the team and transferring out. Redshirt freshman Karrington Davis, a 6'6" "guard" was touted by Bryan Mullins as an impact player when he transferred in to SIU a year ago. He didn't play much and when he did his production was minimal- 11.7 mpg, 3.0 ppg, 1.6 rpg.

Bryan Mullins had to rebuild the SIU roster when he was hired last March. He landed 9 recruits-
                    https://thesouthern.com/sports/colle...402d47fd0.html

... and he had four leftover players from Barry Hinson's 2018-29 team- Aaron Cook, Eric McGill, Brendan Gooch, and Sekou Dembele.

Of the leftover players, McGill will graduate, Gooch transferred, Dembele is recovering from a severe fracture of the tibia and his future is still in doubt, and Cook was injured and will return next season with a medical redshirt.

Of the 9 new players Mullins brought in, only freshmen Marcus Domask, Trent Brown, and Lance Jones return from this seasons roster, and they will also have sharpshooter Ben Harvey next season, a transfer from Eastern Illinois who sat out this season.

So as of now, the only players SIU will have next season appear to be Domask, Brown, Jones, Harvey, Aaron Cook, and possibly Sekou Dembele. Plus, Mullins has 2 high school point guards committed- Eric Butler and Dalton Banks.

So if no other players leave, that leaves Mullins with 5 (or possibly 6 if Dembele cannot return) open scholarships that he needs to fill at this late point in the recruiting cycle.

The second Evansville player has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, and more may follow-
Redshirt junior Artur Labinowicz is leaving and transferring. He played 2 seasons at Coastal Carolina University (2016-2018 ), transferred to Evansville 2 years ago, sat out a year (2018-19), then played this past season (2019-20). He played a lot under Walter McCarty and interim head coach Benny Seltzer, but he never seemed to be a favorite of Todd Lickliter after he took over January 21. Prior to that date, Labinowicz was a starter for McCarty, played well, and averaged 25 minutes per game and 10.3 ppg. He scored a season-high 24 points in their win against Murray State, which was the last game they won this past season. But then, under Lickliter, he came off the bench and his playing time dropped to 12 minutes per game, getting lower as the season progressed. And he averaged only 2.6 ppg in the 12 games under Lickliter. In Evansville's opening MVC Tournament game in St. Louis, he played only 1 minute and was scoreless in a very close game that Evansville lost 58-55 to finish their season with 19 straight MVC losses. He clearly didn't have a future at Evansvile under Todd Lickliter.
                          Here are his stats-https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...tur-labinowicz
                          Game log- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...tur-labinowicz

Because he spent 2 years at CCU and 2 years at Evansville, it is likely he will be a grad-transfer with 1 more year of eligibility left.

Wow, yes that is a huge loss. That leaves three freshmen- small forward Marcus Domask, and guards Lance Jones and Trent Brown as returning players in 2020-21. Plus, there is a chance that forward Sekou Dembele will return, however, he suffered a severe fracture of his tibia in the game at Bradley, and his status for next season is uncertain.
Also, Stevan Jeremic was reported by SIU's beat writer as entering the transfer portal a week ago, but he is still listed on the SIU roster, and he has never been added to the list of transfers on VerbalCommits.com. So maybe he is staying?

In addition, they will get transfer Ben Harvey, who sat out this past season, and they have 2 incoming point guard recruits Dalton Banks and Eric Butler, and a walk-on juco forward Will Keller is still listed on their roster.
It will be interesting to see what happens at SIU. I thought Bryan Mullins could easily have been the COY this past season, but he'll need to do an even better job next year with at 5 or 6 more scholarships to fill.

Drake's Antonio Pilipovic also entered the transfer portal today.
