This is a feel-good story involving college basketball. University of Vermont is hosting Albany tonight in their final regular season game of the year.
To start the game, both teams agreed that Vermont would allow Albany to score an uncontested basket, then they would allow Vermont senior Josh Speidel to score one, too. It was the first and only basket of his career.
Josh Speidel was a highly rated recruit 5 years ago who was committed to Vermont. But in February of 2015, his senior year, he was involved in a serious car accident that left him in a coma for weeks. He ultimately awoke but was left with significant neurologic impairment. Vermont told him and his family they would honor the scholarship offer, but the NCAA granted a waiver that did not count against the team's scholarship limit. He enrolled at Vermont and is going to graduate this May with a 3.40 grade point average. He has been an honorary member of the basketball team for the last 4 years, but had never dressed or played for the team. Tonight on Senior Night, he dressed and started the game and scored the first Vermont basket.-
