Has the #1 seed ever lost their first game in the MVC tournament? How about since it’s been played on St. Louis? Anyone know?

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Straight from the Missouri Valley Conference website this Friday March 6th evening..
"This marks the first time ever that the No. 1 seed has lost in the quarterfinal round of the MVC Tournament. Drake becomes the first No. 8 seed ever to advance to semifinal round of MVC Tournament."

I don't think it has ever happened that the #1 seed lost to their first opponent.
Here is a link to the MVC Media Guide, and starting on page 180 are all the game results from every game since the tournament started in 1977-
        https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sit...edia_Guide.pdf

From what I can see, every #1 seed won their first game.

Edit: sorry, I just spent 10 minutes searching through all the past tournament results, and didn't see that Go_Braves already found the answer!

Prior to this season, only 1 team from the play-in round had ever won a game in the quarterfinals (1998 Jim Molinari Braves). But now there are 3.
Today, both play-in winners advanced by beating the #1 and #2 seeds. What a crazy tournament!

And before anyone asks.... From the Missouri Valley Conference website this Friday March 6th evening..

MVC Tournament Notes - This marked first time in MVC Tournament history that both the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds lost in the quarterfinal round. Valparaiso becomes just the second No. 7 seed in tournament history to advance to semifinal round, joining then No. 7 Bradley which beat then No. 2 Creighton, 76-68, in 1998 quarterfinal round. The Valpo win ends a streak of 21 straight years that the No. 7 seed lost in quarterfinal round. This also is the third straight year a No. 2 seed failed to advance to semifinal round.

Scoring update: After Freaky Friday, no change in the bracket contest standings. No one picked the Valpo and Drake upsets, everyone picked Bradley to beat SIU and Missouri State to "upset" Indiana State. The five of us who voted with our hearts for Bradley to win it all are looking good, as are the two (Wily Coyote and Macabre Mob) who picked MSU. I'm sure none of us would be upset if Valpo beat Missouri State later today!

              Here's how we stand:

6 points -- BUSongwriter, Wily Coyote, and richardk

5 points -- Da Coach, Go_Braves, Macabre Mob, Pauly616, BraveBird, BradleyFan1 and bigjimmy

              Let's get those Bulldogs today!

Go BU! Only three of us have a shot at winning the contest: Myself, Wily Coyote, and richardk. Wily picked Missouri State, while me and richardk have BU. If
Valpo wins (NOT!), there will be 3-way tie. If BU wins, there will be a two-way tie. Sooooo.... If Wily and richard see this before hand, let's do a tiebreaker. Pick how many points BU will score today.

I'll say 79 (my BU grad year)

Here are the standings entering today's game:
9 -- BU Songwriter, Wily Coyote, richardk
                8 -- Go_Braves, BradleyFan1, and bigjimmy
5 -- Da Coach, Macabre Mob, Pauly616, and BraveBird

                Go Braves!

It looks like I win the contest on the tiebreak! richardk and I both had 13 points, but because I'm "younger" (79 grad) than richardk (67 grad) -- and BU scored 80 -- I get the hardware! :-)

I saw all three games in STL. Great fun! Way to go Braves! The chant of MVP for DB when he shot the free throws at the end was awesome!

This tournament went exactly as I predicted. I just didn’t write it down.
