  • Could a One-Time Waiver Rule Be “the Death of College Basketball”?

Refer to the following article - web link provided.

This new rule could be implemented as soon as this upcoming 2020-2021 Season.

Such a rule "once again" favors the Power 5 / Power 6 Conferences - and once again shows who the NCAA is "taking it's queues from".

    Statements from this article:
    • There’s a reason why this is already being supported by the Big Ten and the ACC. Now guys like Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, John Calipari, Bill Self and Tom Izzo can plug holes in their roster with ease. There’s also a reason none of those coaches have spoken out publicly.
    • “I think it will adversely affect everybody except for the top programs,” Richmond’s Chris Mooney said.

Mooney is in a precarious spot. After struggling the last two seasons, the Spiders are 20-6, 10-3 in A-10 play and are set up to return five junior starters off this year’s team — four of which have eclipsed 1,000 career points. However, he is well-aware that guys like Blake Francis, Jacob Gilyard, Grant Golden and Nick Sherod could all be pursued heavily by high-major programs if this rule goes into place prior to next season.

What can he do to try and combat it?

      Nothing.
My initial thinking is that such a ruling could change the Mid Major basketball programs into the equivalent of Baseballs Farm Leagues.

Power 5 or Power 6 coaches could "cherry pick" from the Mid Major programs top proven Mid Major athletes for their roster needs.

Heaven will only know how such a ruling will also affect College Football and other College Sports.

Unless someone convinces me otherwise - I am totally against such a ruling.

Yes, I can see why the power-6 conference schools would favor such a rule, but I can't see why most mid-major and low-major schools would support it. The mid-majors already serve somewhat as "minor leagues" for the big boys, but the 1-year "sit out" rule at least dissuades most kids from transferring. As the article says, over 200 kids each year take advantage of the grad-transfer rule. If this rule was passes, it would open a floodgate and would affect every mid-major, would see their best players coaxed to leave. Hopefully, it will die when it goes to a vote of the NCAA D1 members.

That would be death to mid-majors. I really dislike the NCAA, and this rule would just add to the reasons why.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.
