  • Wichita State recruit fails to qualify

One of Gregg Marshall's first recruits at Wichita State has not qualified and will not be attending the school.

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State men's basketball recruit Ejike (E-ge-k) Hart will not be joining the men's basketball program this year due to academic reasons, head coach Gregg Marshall announced today.

There is also talk on their message board that projected starting point guard Gal Mekel, an Israeli citizen, has not returned to the USA from Israel, and it is not known when he will return. This could affect his eligibility for 2007-2008.

And another new recruit, 7-foot Nigerian Ehimen Orupke hasn't arrived and there is a good possibility he won't be eligible for 2007-2008.

Here is an update on the Shocker recruit, Orupke who isn't yet allowed into the US, apparently a buunch of red tape at the Nigerian government level.

That's what was holding up Dinma Odiakosa from getting to ISU. He was supposed to arrive in the Fall of '04, but due to paperwork issues, he didn't arrive until the Fall of '05. The circumstances with this Shocker kid sound similar.
Dinma Odiakosa 6'8 255......The Nigerian Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 37 points and 27 boards in 2 wins over Bradley. "Will Egolf is 6'9 and he had 4 rebounds. That's not good enough and he's not good enough"....Dick Versace 2/9/10

With so many kids from Europe and Africa coming into the country and enrolling in colleges and junior colleges, I suspect the rules in this area are going to have to be redrawn.
The submission of incidentals such as grades, transcripts, birth certificates, and History & immigration data will need to be standardized and streamlined.
Either that or a new rule like they have on any D-I transfer, that any kid enrolling from outside the country is ineligible or provisionally ineligible for his first year while they review all this data.

It's looking VERY unlikely that he'll be here in time to begin practicing with the team this month. This means waiting until December. Usually, this would necessitate a redshirt year, but a few WSU fans who have communicated with members of the coaching staff are saying he would still probably play this year.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I think it's much more just the way things are in many African nations. Corruption is rampant and unless you're willing to pony up the dough for favorable treatment (which is largely legal there), they'll get around to you when they are good and ready.

as a followup....Wichita State recruit Ehimen Orupke, is still languishing at Three Rivers CC waiting to get eligible, and appears to be staying yet another year there, despite arguments that he should have been eligible by now.

But here is yet some other news...there's a bit of a scandal at Three rivers CC...with apparently lots of fraud and money going the wrong direction...not clear if this will affect anyone's eligibility....

Inappropriate expenditures uncovered...(but there are also hints of other improprieties)
"Some booster club expenditures were noted which may not be appropriate or
prudent uses of funds. These expenditures included the following:
??? Health insurance costs totaling $3,906 were paid for various student athletes
during the 3 years ended June 30, 2008.
??? Dental costs for a student-athlete totaling $867 were paid during the 2
                years ended June 30, 2007.
??? Tuition costs totaling $1,630 were paid for two student-athletes to attend
classes at another institution during the year ended June 30, 2006.
??? Travel costs totaling $1,354 were incurred during the year ended June 30,
2008, to pay for round-trip airfare for a student-athlete to visit his home
                overseas.
??? A total of $2,200 was spent during the year ended June 30, 2008, on 20
watches (at $110 each), which were given to the players, coaches, and
other individuals associated with the men's basketball team who attended a
                national tournament."

looks like the Three Rivers basketball coach is coming under scrutiny....numerous payments to him and to players...
this is the kind of stuff that NCAA would murder Bradley for but would let Kansas or USC slide.

Either way....such sloppy accounting.....more than $9000 in freebies given out to players from "boosters" and by the coach constitutes major NJCAA violations.....surely the hammer should come down hard, but we'll have to wait & see if the NJCAA operates like NCAA.

A WSU fan found a pic of Orukpe and a couple of TRCC teammates from this summer. Orukpe is the one on the right. Shocker fans knew he wasn't a beanpole, but weren't quite expecting him to be that chiseled. The guy in the middle is supposedly a 7'2" kid from Brazil. Orukpe is 6'11"-7'0" (conflicting reports. You know how that goes.)

so who's the 7-footer from Brazil??
TRCC hasn't got anyone by that description on their roster.

TRCC appears to be redoing their athletic website. There is only one page for men's basketball with last year's team picture. No roster that I can see.

I got the info about "Bruno" in this topic at JucoJunction.
