  • Peoria and Champaign vying for IHSA basketball tournament

The IHSA contract for the state basketball tournament with Peoria expires after this year's state tournament games. Peoria has hosted the boys tournament since 1996, and Champaign hosted it for the previous 77 years before it moved to Peoria. It was expected there would be multiple other cities that would submit offers to the IHSA this time. In the past, cities like Moline, Springfield, and Bloomington were rumored to be interested. And 5 years ago, Hoffman Estates and the Sears Center submitted an offer, along with Champaign and Peoria.
But in the end, only Peoria and Champaign submitted official offers for the boys tournament. Champaign upped their offer this time, and with the continued drop in attendance in Peoria and improvements made to the State Farm Center in Champaign, it is thought to be a serious contender to get the tournament back.
The IHSA will visit both cities and make a decision in April.-
