One MVC game Friday, Nov. 15

Xavier is currently ranked # 21. Another great opportunity for the MVC and road test for Missouri State.
As been shared countless times - it is a pity that the mid-majors almost always have to play on the road against these Power 5 (or 6) conference teams. I was thrilled that the SEC refs did not sway their calls and assist Kentucky with a win over Evansville - instead they called a credible game.
I stated this to let a little steam off - because I am still bitter about the way the ACC refs called the Bradley St. Joseph's game. I'll get over it with a few more wins.
Go Mo State and the MVC teams during the non-conference portion of the season.

Xavier leads Missouri State at halftime 32-30. The game is at Xavier.
Xavier jumped out to a 10-0 lead, and maintained a double-digit lead for the first 12 minutes. But then Missouri State came back to cut it to 2 points by halftime. MSU shot the ball well (52.2% overall, 50% from three), but they made 12 turnovers in the half.

Preseason 1st team All-MVC pick, Tulio Da Silva is scoreless in the first half. And 3rd team All-MVC Junior College transfer Gage Prim is playing for the first time.

Looks like the game was tied 56-56 with under a minute left. Missouri State missed a shot to take the lead, and on the rebound, Missouri State leading scorer Keandre Cook was called for a technical foul. Xavier made 1 free throw, then scored on the next possession to take a 59-56 lead. Missouri State missed a final three point attempt to tie, and the game ended 59-56-

For the game, Missouri State had 4 technical fouls!

Someone who watched the game tells me several of the technical fouls were called for "flopping".
Note that the NCAA has a new rule they want enforced this season that has gotten very little publicity to penalize "flopping", "faking" or "embellishing" by players.
Scroll down in this article to the section about "Get Rid of Flopping". This season it will be treated by officials as a "Delay of Game" call. The first instance will result in a Delay of Game Warning. Subsequent instances by the same team will result in a Class B Technical Foul.-

We all have seen numerous examples of the kind of faking the NCAA wants to get rid of. Some coaches actually coach their players to do it, though our coaches are mostly against it as they would rather see their players stay on their feet and defend. But in past years there have been some prolific fakers in the MVC.

Here is a summary, and indeed the final foul that decided the game was a "flop" call that went against Missouri State star Keandre Cook. Cook took a 3-point shot that would have given MSU the lead, and appeared to be fouled on the shot. However, the officials instead called Cook for the "flop" or "embellishment" rule, and since it was not the first flop call, it was ruled a technical foul that put Xavier ahead to stay. It also gave Xavier the possession that ended with a basket to provide the final 3-point margin.

Here is one other game from Friday night. I didn't know where to post this, but it is a funny ending to the game between Kansas and Monmouth. Kansas was blowing out Monmouth 110-55 with a few seconds left, and was just dribbling out the final seconds.
Watch as Monmouth guard George Papas steals the ball from the Kansas player who was simply trying to stall out the final seconds, and races down for a dunk as the game ends. Then he taunts the entire Kansas team!
He received a technical, and Kansas added 2 extra points, so his "heroics" didn't actually accomplish anything but embarrass himself and his coach. So the final score ended up 112-57.

IMO, this was a ridiculous call. The Xavier player makes contact with MSU's Keandre Cook and it was initially called a foul on Xavier. Cook should have gotten 3 free throws. Instead, the officials conferred and reviewed the video, and reversed their foul call and called it a flop, hit Cook with a technical foul, and awarded Xavier free throws. I have always been against players flopping on the "block vs.charge" situation, but it should never be called in this situation involving a fall-away perimeter shot.
This is the most ridiculous rule the NCAA has ever enacted, IMO.

Yep, the refs gave Xavier that game. That's one of the things I really don't like about college basketball. The refs can and do determine far too many outcomes, and that is ridiculous. Worst case scenario, make it a no-call, not a freakin' T.Larry Bird
I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

I disagree DC, I truly believe it was a flop. Additionally, I welcome any effort to remove it from the game as it is out of control, and can lead to injuries. The players have become so trained at doing it, they begin their fall backwards when they see a defender closing out. However, this better be uniformly called against the P5 too, and not be one of those points of emphasis that fades after conference play starts.Larry Bird

Why does college basketball even need a "flop rule"? The only possible reason to suddenly make up a new "flop rule" after 120+ years of college basketball is because the NCAA is finally admitting their officials suck. Just drop this new rule and get the calls right.
If they feel the need to create this flop rule, then just use it only on the block/charge plays, which is the real reason they invented it..
Any time you give officials one more new rule to apply arbitrarily, you can bet they will screw it up, usually in favor of the Power 6 schools.

Not sure why you felt the need to say, 'believe what you want'. If you felt I was being confrontational in my response to you, I apologize, and I was honestly just asking a sincere question from my own perspective. If it came across in any way other than that, then I'm sorry.Larry Bird
