Drake basketball player Tremell Murphy charged after accidental shooting seriously injures man
https://www.desmoinesregister.com/st...hy/2299569001/
Wow, this story really sounds bad. He shoots a man, concocts a story and lies about the victim's injury being caused by a fall, and even gets "witnesses" to testify that the man really just fell and hurt his head (ignoring the bullet hole in the wall and the spent shell in his room) and is only charged with giving "false reports to law enforcement and discharging a firearm within city limits, two misdemeanors, according to a news release from Des Moines police".
Also a bit strange, this shooting happened August 31, and it is just now, 12 days later, being made public and only after charges are filed?
Was Drake University and the basketball program hoping they could keep this out of the news altogether?
Do all the Drake basketball players keep loaded hand guns in their bedroom drawers? And is that a practice that is OK with the University and Coach?
As always, I will be surprised if he misses more than a preseason exhibition game.

Drake basketball player not yet with team after being charged for accidental shooting at house party
Drake basketball player not yet with team after being charged for accidental shooting at house partyTremell Murphy, senior basketball player at Drake, is not practicing with the team, coach Darian DeVries said Wednesday. Murphy's currently on probation.
Tremell Murphy was just reinstated to the Drake team today following his arrest for discharging a firearm, shooting another student in the head, and filing a false police report about the incident a couple months ago.
Drake men's basketball player Tremell Murphy is back with the team and will be eligible to play beginning Nov. 25.
A release from Drake basketball says he will be eligible to play in Drake's Nov. 25 game in the Gulf Coast Showcase against Miami (Ohio). He will have missed 5 regular season games and an exhibition game because of his suspension. The games he will miss are Drakes games against Kennesaw State, Cincinnati, UMKC, Simpson College (Div. III), and Lehigh. To me, this looks more like an appropriate kind of discipline a head coach should enforce for someone with no prior history. I applaud Darian DeVries. This stands in stark contrast to another MVC coach located east on I-74 who allowed players charged with felonies, domestic violence charges, theft, burglary, multiple DUIs, and other serious crimes to return to his team and play, often without missing any regular season games! And, he kept forgiving players with repeated arrests and team violations and kept reinstating them with little or no discipline.
At least Muller seems to have realized his mistakes and learned his lesson-

The Tremell Murphy case at Drake has just resurfaced in the news....
As noted above, Tremell Murphy, who was a senior basketball player at Drake last September was involved in a shooting at his apartment. Another student visiting his apartment was shot in the head. He initially lied to police and claimed the shooting victim's injury was caused by a fall, and he even got other witnesses to lie as well and support the claim of a fall. Police noticed a bullet hole in the wall, and eventually Tremell Murphy admitted to have accidentally discharged a handgun that he owned in his bedroom, which went through the wall and hit the other student. He was charged with "false reports to law enforcement and discharging a firearm within city limits, two misdemeanors, according to a news release from Des Moines police".
He was suspended by the team, and missed the first 5 games of this past season. When he returned, he got injured and eventually redshirted, so he was expected to return in 2020-21 as a redshirt senior. But a lawsuit was filed this past week by the injured student who is suing Drake University, Tremell Murphy, and the property management companies (it's common to sue any party that has the "deep pockets").

Now the Des Moines Register is reporting-
After the shooting but before officers arrived at the home in the 1100 block of 27th Street, a Bulldogs basketball coach showed up. The coach told Murphy to deny any involvement in the victim's injury, according to the lawsuit.
The university denied the allegations in a statement made to the Register late Friday.
“It is not true as claimed by the plaintiff that a Drake men’s basketball coach told Mr. Murphy to deny involvement in Mr. Miller’s injuries. Additionally, the residence in which the shooting incident took place is a private residence and is not owned or otherwise affiliated with the university.”
Not a good look for the Drake basketball program.
This story has now been picked up by national news organizations and national media-
