  • Great story on past Brave Joe B. McDade

In addition to nearly four decades of judiciary experience, Judge McDade’s life has been marked by an enduring commitment to civil rights and education.

Thanks for the article tornado. Very interesting

Every Bradley grad should be proud McDade is a fellow alum!

I particularly enjoyed his story in the article about having never heard of Shelly McMillon and Curly Johnson.

Of course, McDade was from Texas & had no idea of that great Chicago DuSable BB team.

My dad always talked about what could have been IF all the DeSable stars came with Shelly and Curly to Bradley....

Curly Johnson actually wasn't on the DuSable team that played in the Illinois State Championship game-he had graduated at mid-year...along with the teams 2nd leading scorer Bobby Jackson...which made that legend of that team all the more impressive.

And Shelly McMillon was considered the 3rd best player(even though he led the Tourney in scoring). The top 2 players were F Charlie Brown and G Paxton Lumpkins...........image if both of those guys had come to Bradley with McMillon....I know from my father that Bradley tried to recruit them....both went to Indiana instead....though both left....Paxton quit to join the Harlem Globetrotters & Charlie Brown transferred to Seattle-where he teamed with Elgin Baylor...I believe Seattle played for the NCAA championship vs Kentucky

Then a couple years later, another DuSable star-McKinley Cowsen(who had started as a soph on that famous State tourney team) was heavily recruited by Bradley-but stayed home and went to DePaul(twice team captain)
