  • Dutch article on Donar reports Rienk Mast will redshirt this upcoming season

We kinda knew this would be the case...but this news confirms
that he will be here and he will redshirt 2019-2020...

    Translated, the article says...
"Rienk Mast will also no longer be featured in a Donar shirt next season. ...already announced that he would be leaving for America.
Mast, after being seriously injured in the final phase of last season, will start a so-called 'red shirt' year in America after the summer.
This means that he will study abroad in his first year, but that he will only start playing a year later and from that moment on
will be entitled to four years of basketball"

It's a decision that isn't final until the season's over. If the team's doing well in January and he's ready to contribute you could change those plans. Of course maybe he really wants to stay 5 years.

Just curious but can anyone remember the last time BRADLEY had a player who was REDSHIRTING..
but then "took the red shirt off" and unredshirted half-way thru the season?

      Answer- it happened in 2010

Yeah we knew this was coming but too bad for the young man and it leaves us rather thin up front. Hope Gabriel can give us good minutes and Ari shows good improvement over the summer. The graduation of Luuk leaves a hole we really need to fill.

I can recall at least one other instance. Early in the 1996-97 season, Anthony Parker's senior season, he broke a bone in his foot, and missed the next 2 months. Jim Molinari had a freshman named Michael Collins from Wheaton Warrenville South who was redshirting. It was a very promising season for Bradley coming off their NCAA appearance in 1996, so to help keep Bradley from falling out of the MVC race, Molinari un-redshirted Collins and started him right away in place of Parker. Collins helped with depth, but he was no Anthony Parker. Collins only averaged 1.5 ppg for the season. Anthony Parker returned from his injury, though he wasn't 100%, and Collins barely played after that. Parker, Aaron Zobrist, and Bayo Akinkunle lead Bradley to a 2nd place tie in the regular season, 2 games behind ISU, and an NIT bid. If Parker had stayed healthy that season, it seems certain Bradley would have won the MVC. Collins stayed at Bradley one more year after that season, then transferred to Division III Wheaton College, where he played very well for his remaining 2 seasons. He was All-Conference in the CCIW in 1999 & 2000.

According to this tweet by someone at the Bradley Scout, Bradley men's basketball "has not discussed redshirting incoming freshman Rienk Mast because of his 'leg injury.' "

I am not sure how to interpret this. We do not actually know all the details about his injury or his reported surgery, and likely the team doesn't either. So, maybe they are just waiting for Rienk to arrive at Bradley, evaluate him here with the team experts, then discuss with him and make a decision.

you'd have to wonder where the info for that Dutch writer's article would have come from...
Likely he had never heard the word "redshirt" before or knew what it meant - I seriously doubt he made it up out of thin air

Anyway - even tho fans are interested, I will leave the choice to Mast & his advisors - they will make the best decision for him.

You don't have to make the decision now. If he's isn't ready by March, he'll never play and get his redshirt. If he's ready by February then you'll have a difficult choice to make at that time-- is the short term boost worth him losing a year of eligibility? Any earlier than that and the decision is easier.

Though there have been little or no recent reports publicly about Rienk Mast, and nothing coming from our local media, I can confirm what the Bradley Scout reported that Bradley coaches are not planning to redshirt Rienk Mast at this time. Furthermore, Bradley head coach Brian Wardle made a trip over to Netherlands to see Rienk since his injury, and get the medical story first hand. The Bradley medical team now has all the details of his injury and surgery, and believe there is a chance he could return and play this coming (2019-20) season and help the team down the stretch. If he is not able to play, as long as he doesn't appear in more than 30% of the scheduled games or appear in any game past the halfway point of the season, he would still qualify for the medical redshirt. He is currently rehabbing in his home country, and will be at Bradley for the start of the fall semester in August.

Kudos to the Bradley Scout, and to our other sources who are more on top of this situation than our local professional journalists.

every player is different - every body is different - every surgeon is different and every ACL repair is a little different....but someone show me a few players who came back & played Division I basketball within 6-7 months of an ACL repair? I know of only one but he later RE-tore the same ACL and it ended his career altogether.

Look at Loyola's Christian Negron - the kid was a real star - a 4-Star recruit in high school getting looks from top schools..
When he was just 16 years old he played for the Puerto Rican Senior National Team and led them in both scoring and rebounding!
HE PLAYED AGAINST THE US TEAM AND WENT FOR 23 PTS AND 13 REBOUNDS!! - LINK
then he tore his ACL, had the repair and has never even been close to what he was before the injury - now he's going to finish his career at DII.

The more a player utilized his mobility, his quick lateral moves or his jumping ability, then the harder it is for those players to come back from ACL repair,
and Rienk Mast is the type who uses such mobility & moves and does not relay so much on brute size or strength. It will be hard for him to be court-ready in six months. Not saying impossible - but hard. I said the same thing about Ari Boya (admittedly, a different type of injury) last fall when there were some "insiders" who said he'd be ready to go in December and would help us immensely - so it was silly to talk redshirt. I would love to see more than one example of a top college player who was back on the court in six months after ACL surgery.
Guys like Christian Negron, Brady Ernst, SIU's Thik Bol, etc...all tried to come back but ended up having even more surgery and taking 1-2 years or more - maybe they should NOT have rushed back -
