2019 NBA Draft

The 2019 NBA Draft was held tonight (Thursday, June 20). Other than a few trades, there were no really big surprises. Duke Freshman and National Player of the Year Zion Williamson was picked #1 overall by the New Orleans Pelicans. Murray State's Ja Morant was picked #2 by the Memphis Grizzlies, and another Duke freshman, R.J. Barrett was #3 by the Knicks.
The Bull's picked at #7 in the 1st round and chose Coby White, a 6'5" freshman point guard from North Carolina, and they picked #8 in the 2nd round (#38 overall) and chose Daniel Gafford, a 6'10" sophomore center from Arkansas. No MVC players drafted.

Though there were no MVC players drafted, there were a couple players with Bradley connections-

Jordan Poole of Michigan who was drafted #28 in the first round by the Golden State Warriors was a class of 2017 Bradley recruit by Coach Wardle back in 2015 and 2016. He made an unofficial visit to Bradley on June 20, 2015.

Isaiah Roby of Nebraska was drafted #15 in the second round (#45 overall) by the Detroit Pistons. He was a class of 2016 recruit by Bradley back in late 2014 by then-coach Geno Ford and his staff-

Marial Shayok of Iowa State was drafted #24 in the second round (#54 overall) by the Philadelphia 76ers. He is the brother of former Bradley player Shayok Shayok who was a member of Geno Ford's first recruiting class in 2011. Later in 2011, Coach Ford started recruiting Marial Shayok when he was still playing in Canada. But after older brother Shayok Shayok left BU after just 1 season, our chances with Marial Shayok evaporated.

Unfortunately, the MVC player that many (especially ISU fans) touted was going to be an NBA player was Milik Yarbrough of Illinois State. He might have sabotaged his own chances with all his legal and behavioral problems under Dan Muller, but by last night, he apparently was nowhere to be found on any NBA team's draft board.

One other player drafted last night that had a connection to Bradley's head coach Brian Wardle was Admiral Schofield of University of Tennessee, drafted #12 in the second round (#42 overall). He was a high school teammate of Milik Yarbrough at Zion-Benton Township High School in Zion, Illinois.
One of the coaches that recruited Admiral Schofield the heaviest and was the first coach to offer him a scholarship in early 2014 was Brian Wardle when he was the head coach at Wisconsin-Milwaukee-

Here are some other tidbits of info-
2019 marks the 16th straight season that the MVC did not have it's Player of the Year drafted in the NBA Draft. Marques Townes was the 2019 MVC POY, and as far as I can find, not a single team considered him. The last MVC POY who was drafted out of the MVC in his POY season was Kyle Korver in 2003. Prior to that, you have to go all the way back to Chad Gallagher of Creighton in 1991 for the last MVC POY to be drafted. And the next one prior to Gallagher was Hersey Hawkins in 1988.

There have been non-POY players drafted in recent years. Missouri State's Alize Johnson was drafted last year late in the 2nd round by the Indiana Pacers.
But prior to that, you have to go back to 2006 Patrick O'Bryant (Bradley), 1999 Rico Hill (ISU), and 1997 Anthony Parker (Bradley).

And these are the only players drafted out of the MVC in the 1st round by the NBA since 1980-
2006- Patrick O'Bryant, Bradley (1st round, #9 pick)
2005- Danny Granger, Bradley (1st round, #17 pick)*
1997- Anthony Parker, Bradley (1st round, #21 pick)
1988- Hersey Hawkins, Bradley (1st round, #6 pick)
1982- David Thirdkill, Bradley (1st round, #15 pick)

*I stretched things a little bit with Danny Granger (), since he doesn't really count. He had transferred to New Mexico before being drafted.
But I wanted to show that Bradley has had the only 1st round NBA draft picks out of the MVC in the last 40 years, and they have had 4 of them.

well - Doug McDermott, who played three years in the MVC, was the MVC Player of the Year twice, and scored over 2200 points
as an MVC player- was drafted #11 in 2014. Of course I know he played one year elsewhere but ....
he is clearly an MVC player who was POY and went in the 1st round.

I was listing the players who were drafted the same year. they were POY.. McDermott was not the POY when he was drafted. In fact, he wasn't even playing in the MVC the year he was drafted. If you count him, then we should count Danny Granger as a Bradley NBA player.

As noted earlier, ISU's top player, Milik Yarbrough, did not get drafted in the June 2019 NBA Draft. And it does not appear that he ever landed an invitation to any NBA summer league team or any preseason NBA camps. Now he has decided to forego any chance of playing in the NBA G-League, and he will head overseas to play professionally for União Desportiva Oliveirense Basquetebol of the Portugal LPB League. The team is located in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal.-
