Former Illinois State head coach Kevin Stallings was hit hard with a 3-year "show cause" penalty for level II coaching violations following an NCAA investigation into violations at Pitt, where Stallings was last coaching. He has been out of coaching since he was fired by Pitt in March, 2018.
The 3-year "show cause" penalty means that if a school wishes to avoid the NCAA penalties imposed on that coach, it must send representatives to appear before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions and "show cause" (i.e., prove the existence of good reason) as to why it should not be penalized for hiring that coach.

The 3-year show cause penalty seems a little severe for the violations Stallings was punished for. The NCAA believed he directed the erasure of practice video tapes and files to try to hide the illegal coaching actions by non-approved coaches, which likely made the penalty much worse than it might have been.

If anyone is wondering what the longest and most severe "show cause" penalty was that the NCAA imposed, here they are for men's and women's basketball-
        Men's basketball-
Donnie Tyndall - The former head coach at Morehead State, Southern Miss and Tennessee, Tyndall received a 10-year show cause penalty on April 8, 2016—tied with Bliss for the longest on record for a head basketball coach—for numerous incidents of academic fraud, arranging payments to players and covering up the payments while at Southern Miss. Tennessee fired him in 2014 after the extent of the violations at Southern Miss became known. The penalty runs until April 7, 2026. If he is hired by an NCAA member school during this period, he will be suspended from coaching duties-effectively banning him from the collegiate coaching ranks until the end of the 2025-26 season. If Tyndall is hired by an NCAA member school after the penalty runs out, he will be suspended for the first half of the first season of his return. This led USA Today to call Tyndall's penalty the most severe ever meted out to a head coach.

Andre McGee – The former Louisville director of operations received a 10-year show-cause, tied for the longest on record for any men's basketball coach, on June 15, 2017. In 2015, a self-described former madam alleged that McGee had paid her $10,000 from 2010 to 2014—a period that included Louisville's most recent national championship—to organize strip shows, including sex acts, for players and recruits. The NCAA found her allegations credible enough to place Louisville on four years' probation, suspend head coach Rick Pitino for Louisville's first five ACC games in 2017–18 (Pitino would subsequently be fired by the university before the suspension began, stemming from an unrelated matter), and order an as-yet-undetermined number of wins to be vacated, potentially including the 2013 national title. An appeal by Louisville failed, and the school was officially stripped of its 2013 title in February 2018.

        Women's basketball-
Phil Collins – An assistant at UNC Greensboro, Collins was fired in May 2018 after it emerged that he had bet extensively on professional and college sports, including on UNCG men's basketball games, for at least two years. The NCAA bans athletic personnel from betting on any competition in any sport in which the NCAA sponsors a championship, legal or otherwise. On July 25, 2019, the NCAA gave Collins a 15-year show-cause order–the longest such penalty on record for any NCAA sport–effective until 2034. The former assistant director of the school's fundraising organization received a four-year show-cause for making similar but less extensive wagers, and the UNCG women's program was placed on probation for 3 years, but with no scholarship reductions or postseason bans.

Idaho just removed the "Interim" term from the title for Zac Claus, and have named him the official head coach at Idaho.
Zac Claus, who has acted as interim head coach since July, has been named the University of Idaho’s head men’s basketball coach, director of athletics Terry Gawlik announced on Tuesday. Claus becomes the 30th men’s basketball coach in Vandal history. He got his first win as the interim head coach on November 5, 2019, againstContinue Reading →

Yes, is is located in a small rural town in a part of the state that a lot of people don't even know exists. There isn't much there. Anyone here who has ever been to Macomb knows what I am talking about. Their basketball facilities are probably not the worst in Division I, but they are close. They have no significant winning history. Other than 2 years under Jim Molinari (2011-12 & 2012-13) the previous winning season was over 20 years ago. WIU is not known for athletic excellence, and it isn't known for it's academics, either. It has to be just about the most difficult D1 school to recruit talented basketball kids to. Whoever they hire is almost doomed to fail.

Btw, Billy Wright's salary was $127,500, one of the lowest salaries for any D1 head coach. They will have a hard time attracting a new coach at that salary.
Wright also had a unique clause in his contract that required him to play 3 "buy games" every other year (2 "buy games" in the alternate years) just to help the athletic department fund his staff's salary. That meant he was essentially guaranteed 3 losses before those seasons even started.

good read on Jeff Goodman’s Twitter for the 2020-21 version of this thread. Several mentions of Porter Moser and the DePaul job.

Well researched by Jeff Goodman, as all his stuff is. But, I always wonder about these kinds of comments:
(regarding the DePaul job) : "If a move is made here, Loyola’s Porter Moser is the frontrunner"

Is that based on some kind of inside knowledge, or a reliable rumor? Or is it just his own speculation and not based on anything other than it sounds plausible?

Moser had better offers, but chose to stay at Loyola with a nice raise and an extension through 2026. He has said he is very happy at Loyola, but sometimes money talks. However, I don't see him taking the DePaul job.

I find this an odd firing. He has essentially built this program up, and it seemed like as recently as last season there was some real momentum.

Yes, I think there is more to the story. Majerle was extremely well liked by fans and media. He took the program from a new D1 startup to four 20-win seasons in a row until this season he was just 13-17-

And Tim Cluess steps down as Iona's head coach after 10 seasons, reportedly due to health reasons. Cluess has been highly successful at Iona. He had 9 straight winning seasons averaging over 22 wins per season and 6 NCAA appearances, until this season he was 12-17.
