  • NCAA rule changes for 2019-20

4 new rules were approved and will be put into place for the 2019-20-
The NCAA is moving the men's 3-point line back to the international distance of 22 feet, 1 ¾ inches beginning next season.

    1) 3-point line will be moved back to the international distance.
    2) The shot clock will only reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the usual 30.
    3) Coaches will now be able to call live-ball timeouts in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime.
    4) Players will now be given technical fouls for derogatory language toward an opponent.

From a fan standpoint I don’t like the last one. Techs that have seemingly no explanation can be frustrating when you’re sitting in the stands. Unless they’re going to come on the mic and say “number 32 in white used a homophobic slur”
    Gotta stop feeding the trolls.

yeah - but the trash-talking is getting a little out of control, and the refs need the encouragement to do something about it....

The three point argument is interesting - the last time the NCAA moved the line back (from 19-9 to 20-9) everyone thought that
3-point accuracy would drop. But really is DIDN'T because the farther distance discouraged guys who were bad shooters from taking them,
so that only the better shooters did and the accuracy did not drop...and has even continued to climb now to over 35% average throughout Division-I

Back in the 90's the NBA shrunk the 3-pt distance thinking it would increase scores and boost offense - but it backfired!
It generated a temptation that caused way too many shots from bad shooters and offensive production actually went DOWN.

I don't like any of the new rules. These rules will all favor the bigger schools who have more talent and deeper benches.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

The only one of the rule changes that might significantly affect teams in the the 2019-20 season will be the moving of the 3-point line back to the international distance (22 feet 1¾ inches). That is about 17 inches farther back than the previous NCAA line (20 feet 9 inches). Bradley has 2 of the top 4 three point shooters in the MVC returning for 2019-20-- Darrell Brown (79-178, 44.4%) and Nate Kennell (65-162, 40.1%), and many of their shots were taken from well beyond the 22' 9" line last season. Their combined total of 144 made and 340 attempts were well more than half of all the three pointers by Bradley as a team. Both are good enough shooters that I don't see the change affecting them very much. So the rule change might affect Bradley less than some of the other MVC teams.
Beyond next season, it remains to be seen who will become Bradley's main 3-point shooters. Of the other returning players, only Elijah Childs (13 made 3-pointers) and JaShon Henry (2 made 3-pointers) even made a three pointer last season.

What is clear is that Bradley needs to keep recruiting good 3-point shooters to replace what we'll lose after next season.

The two European kids are supposed to be good 3-point shooters. The 3-point line line there is the same as the new line in the college game
