UNI also lost Carlton Reed with a broken bone in his foot.
That's 2 probable guard starters out for the rest of the WUG. That's now 4 to-be contributors missing from this team.
Wow, this is one reason these preseason excusions can turn into a negative.
I have to think getting beat badly in one game and then winning by a 50+ point margin are two games that probably don't benefit anyone.
really, how can a team gain a benefit by whalloping someone that is obviously as hapless as that Angola team.
They'd be better of scrimmaging against a pick up bunch of intramural kids at UNI, or even against the UNI women's team.
One of Angola's starters was 0 for 13
surprisingly turnovers, steals, blocks were all about even, but Angola just doesn't have anyone who hit the bucket even though they got more shots than UNI.
Nothern Iowa wins their first game in the medal round against Turkey, 87-65
and will play China on Monday (at 1:30AM our time).
UNI has beaten China to now go to 3-1
the score was 88-51, Travis Brown had 24 points, Eric Coleman had 14 points, 7 rebs.
The USA was 11-18 on 3-pointers, and China went to the FT line only twice and was 0-2, while the USA was 5-8.
The USA had a 42-16 rebounding edge, so I know Yao Ming wasn't playing!
The USA team, represented by UNI, is now into the quarterfinals.
The crazy thing is that Turkey beat Lithuania this morning by 12 points, so if UNI wouldn't have won by the 20+ margin that they did, they may not be moving onto the next round, as there would have been three teams at 3-1 in that pool play (Turkey, Lithuania, USA). Based on point spread, USA was able to move on. The crappy thing is that UNI will have to face Lithuania again if they beat Serbia. I think that the winner of the Lithuania game would go onto the gold game, and the loser play for 3rd.
That would be a pretty amazing feat with our starting PG and WG out for the tourney with injuries. If anything, this tournament has allowed UNI the opportunity to grow Kerwin Dunham, Adam Koch, and Jordan Eglseder, while expanding the role of Jared Josten into a combo guard once again.
UNI did not move onto the next round (Elite 8 ). Even though they finished with a 2-0 record in their '2nd phase' games, due to the Turks beating Lithuania, they forced a 3-1 record b/t the teams in the 2nd phase (each team bringing a head to head result from Pool play---i.e.- UNI's loss to Lithuania). B/c UNI, Lithuania, and Turkey were each 3-1, it went to point differential. At first UNI was told it was a point spread based on 'phase 2' scores (i.e.- Lithuania score + Turkey/China). If that happened, UNI moves on as a 2 seed into the Elite 8.
Ney, that didn't happen. They went point differential b/t the 3 tied teams (Lith,Turk,UNI). UNI had a point differential of -12...Turkey, -11. Turkey moves on...with Lithuania. Despite the fact UNI won both of their 'Phase 2' games.
Anyway, Panther fans are big time bummed. Very disappointing. Just thought you guys would like to know.
UNI could finish 5-1 and with only 9th place...while teams ahead of them could finish with 2 or 3 losses.
Despite the blowout wins and losses early, the whole trip can turn out to be a boost to the kids' confidence that they were able to pull it together and do this well.
I guess the thing that really sucks is that UNI advanced to the 2nd phase having finished 2nd in their pool play. Then, they go 2-0 in Phase 2 (the only team in their 2nd phase to do so), and then don't get to move on. I guess that doesn't make much sense to me. If UNI scores one more bucket in any of their games against Turkey/Lithuania, they would be moving on...they make one more FT, they probably move on too.
From the first game of their pool play that had to be moved an hour before tipoff b/c the conditions were deemed 'unplayable' to this...the overall World U Games experience hasn't been one that I have been impressed with.
UNI moves to 4-1 in the World University Games with a 59-44 win over Finland
They face Israel tonight for 9th place and could end up with a 5-1 tecord in 9th place and have several teams ahead of them with 2 and even 3 losses.
You guys should come over to PantherNation.Com tonight for the next hour. The 2nd half of the UNI game is about to start. Close game b/t UNI and Israel.
BTW, the captain's name for Israel is Lior Lipshits...seriously.
