  • SIU Head Coach search

Sounds like SIU might be bringing back an ex-player and giving him his first head coaching job:
CARBONDALE — SIU is "in talks" to try to bring Bryan Mullins back to Carbondale as its next head men's basketball coach, according to a report by KFVS-TV Saturday night.

I've got a theory that if you give 100 percent all of the time, somehow things will work out in the end.

Again, it looks like our sources are quite accurate, and our reporting is way ahead of everyone else's.
This was posted over a week ago, before Barry Hinson announced his "retirement", and long before anyone was mentioning Bryan Mullins as their next head coach-

The only snag might be if he wins the MVC Tournament. There is already a plan to replace him with former SIU star Bryan Mullins, currently an assistant coach under Porter Moser at Loyola.
Mullins has never had head coaching experience anywhere, and only 3 seasons as an assistant coach at Loyola.
For the record, I am hearing it is a done deal that Mullins will be SIU's next coach.

Hopefully for us Mullins won’t have as much success as a coach as he did as a player. He was a real gamer from day one. Great player and it won’t surprise me if he’s a similarly great coach. If every team hires a quality coach where will the easy wins come from? But hopefully the valley will return to the point where it can get multiple bids to the big dance.
      Gotta stop feeding the trolls.

I heard several people in St. Louis talking about the SIU situation - a lot of their fanbase feel it is a foregone conclusion he will be their next coach..
but there was some talk that he'd wait to see if Porter Moser got lured away this spring - then he'd have two head coaching options to play off each other for the best deal...

btw - in that article in The Southern -- it says the other two candidates they are considering
are Anthony Beane - a holdover assistant - and I think the fanbase would be miffed if they made this move...
...and Kent Williams - who is currently a high school coach at the same high school Ryan Stipanovich came from.
Does anyone seriously think SIU would go for a high school coach? Is this guy serious?

That is pretty impressive. I do love this forum.

Yes, I heard from several SIU people in St. Louis about Kent Williams. He is liked by a lot of SIU fans, so I think they are seriously considering him.
Williams spent the last 2 seasons at DeSmet High School in St. Louis, but before that, he was an assistant under Jon Harris at SIUE for 2 years, and before that he was an assistant under Cuonzo Martin for 6 seasons, 3 at Missouri State and 3 at Tennessee. And prior to that he spent 3 years at Purdue on Matt Painter's staff as DBO.
He has a lot more coaching experience than Bryan Mullins, whose coaching experience consists of just 3 seasons at Loyola as an assistant under Porter Moser.
Their AD has reportedly been in touch with Williams since earlier this past season. Williams was inducted into the MVC Hall of Fame on Saturday in St. Louis, and was at the SIU game on Friday night.
Nobody I talked to was mentioning Beane. I would be surprised if he is being considered seriously.

One more article on Barry Hinson
              - if you have the time to read anything today - this one is worth the reading...

              https://www.midmajormadness.com/2019...mvc-jerry-kill

the the people at SIU and especially the large portion of the fans who chanted "Fire Hinson" and even held up signs
              at games saying "Fire Hinson"
have gotten what they wanted but done a great disservice to their school and to Barry.
I am sure there are very good fans but we have seen an awful lot of really horrible fans there recently.

It is well known how they treated Hinson and how their fanbase has a whole bunch of whining, apathetic losers who bitch about everything...
It is night and day different from the Bradley fanbase that stayed civil, patient & loyal despite far worse treatment by our administration and far worse LOSING and lousy basketball handed to us by Joanne & crew. If they don't get alum Mullins - then I suspect they might have trouble getting anyone good to take that job with candidates knowing the kind of classless people who call themselves fans there.

Southern Illinois University was "spoiled" winning over 20 games each season and going to the NCAA six years in a row 2002, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 - with Sweet 16 finishes 2002 and 2007. As any fan base and university that tasted such sweet success - they crave for a return and look for what they think will be a "quick fix". Bradley learned it's lesson hiring Geno Ford and it's very unsupportive President and AD. Major changes had to be done at Bradley - a new President, new AD, and a new Head Coach and starting 4 or 5 freshmen the fall of 2015. For Bradley it was not a quick fix - but a steady rebuilding with determine people and players. Southern Illinois fans may never say it - but sometime in the Spring of 2021 will quietly regret firing Barry Hinson.

It was completely unprecedented in over 120 YEARS of college sports!!!
Bradley literally cleaned house from the very top on down....
President, AD, & head coach of the marquee sport all fired at once - it's never been done anywhere that I know of...

That's why Da Coach was saying that the PJS MISSED the sports story of the millennium right under their noses when they failed
to investigate the slimy stuff that led to such an UNPRECEDENTED house cleaning, and gave that crooked crew a complete pass.

But Dr. Roberts, Dr. Reynolds, and Coach Wardle have indeed rebuilt the right way and taken the garbage properly to the dump and disposed of it, while making sure that nobody new was brought on board who would repeat those same slimy and incompetent moves we saw under Glasser.

This would require actual journalism, and even investigative journalism. It is way easier to sit back and make up stories or only report on things you are hand fed.

signs a 5-year deal worth $475,000 per year - (per SIU themselves) making him one of the higher paid coaches in the MVC right off the bat
..per various reports, only Jacobson, Moser and Muller make significantly more

I thought Wardle got around that much. Do you know what we're paying him and for how long?

the PJS said Wardle was paid $434K (PM me if you want that link as I am not going to post it) but we all know there are additional clauses like bonuses for winning the MVC Tourney, the Coach of the Year or exceeding a certain Grade Point or academic measure, etc..... so maybe someone else makes close to $475K but as a starter salary for Mullins- that's a pretty surprising number for a school with such serious financial problems. They must have backing from a few wealthy donors. *

It will be interesting to see if Bryan can get some of those kids over the Illini. One thing we can just about bet on, SIU someday may have to fire a native son.
