Wow...that's sad to hear, did not know he never coached and NCAA tourney game. Good Luck to Barry in whatever endeavor he decides to do! IMO he is already missed.

At Missouri State Barry Hinson's team had one of the highest if not near the highest (or best) RPIs in NCAA history that was "not" chosen for the NCAA tournament, and Barry made a statement like "what does it take to get an invitation".... Very very similar to the NCAA snub of Bradley in 1982. Good luck Barry - where ever you go to coach again that team will get one heck of a coach. AND..... I don't get it - there is some type of not known history there at SIU with Barry that is not obvious to the rest of us - with Barry having to make a "pact" with the former SIU Chancellor. Good luck Barry - I will miss your fun loving sense of humor.

Barry has only one year on his current contract (thru 2020) but his buyout is stipulated at half his salary - so it would cost
SIU $175,000 - I wonder if the deal had already been negotiated...

elsewhere - there's talk of Indiana State's Greg Lansing getting fired but....
he has TWO years left on his current contract and his buyout would be $500,000 - and their beat writer
thinks that's way too much and perhaps the school cannot pursue that avenue - they may be stuck with him another year

Video of press conference- Coach Hinsons' personal remarks start at the 10:00 mark. It is worth watching-

And here is a tweet that shows the class and dignity of the SIU fans-
          https://twitter.com/MrMattCraig/stat...41720336834561

          Transcript of Barry's statement-

"I've been coaching for 38 years, and I've been blessed to be a part of this conference for 16 years, and there's nobody that loves the Valley more than I do. Each and every venue that I've ever coached in, has just been outstanding. I got to spend nine years in Springfield, Missouri. It started off as, I was the last coach at Southwest Missouri and the first coach at Missouri State, and I got a second chance to come back to the Valley when Mario Moccia hired me at Southern Illinois. Just a great program, a tradition-rich program.

Last March, the chancellor and I made a pact that if I did not go to the NIT or the NCAAs that it would be time for me to step away. And I've had the most enjoyable year, believe it or not, being around these young men and being around our current athletic director, Jerry Kill. I couldn't be more excited about Saluki Athletics right now than I am, because I know where it's headed. I know who's running the ship now, and I know we've had a lot of issues there on campus in Carbondale, but those issues are getting ready to go away.

If you quote me on one thing, I'd like for you to quote me on this. I am so sorry. I am so sorry that we couldn't get back to the tournament. It's haunted me my entire life. And I'm a man of faith, and my dad taught me a long time ago I know not what my future holds, but I know who holds my future.

I've made great friends, in these coaches in this league, that I've made over the 16 years, that will be life-long friends. The players that I've coached against, and the players I've had the pleasure to coach, and I've been able to work under one of the best conference commissioners that a guy could work under. I've been so blessed. I've been so blessed. And I've had tragedy in my life, and every time I've had it, somebody in the conference, or in the coaching community, or the fans, have rallied behind my family. But I want to thank you for giving me 16 wonderful years in this conference, and I'll do anything I can to help it in the future. But it's time. It's time for me to step away. Thank you."

As reported here, Loyola Assistant Coach Bryan Mullins will be named the new SIU Head Coach as soon as Loyola's season is completed.

I am hearing that Barry is not interested in coaching again. At least not right away.
He'll probably resurface in a slightly different capacity.
I could see him as the next great TV color/analyst guy.

And btw, it looks like our informants were well informed. This was posted yesterday morning-

So sad to see him go but as you said so many schools would be fortunate to have him as their coach. As reported another post though I think he takes time off and I could see him as a analyst on tv and he would be so great at it. He would quickly become one of the favorites with all of his stories he has.
Will miss him at the BU luncheons as I never laughed so hard as when he told his stories.

It ain't over til its over ... maybe Lansing will be reassigned & taken off the bench before he can b.s. his way to drive another stake in the heart of Sycamore fans? No reason for him to coach (he ain't got it) and will do more harm than help. Past time for change in Terre Haute. If he has a "Key" player or two transfer they will wish they had taken action sooner rather than later.

Barry is actually getting out while the getting's good. No team in the MVC loses more from their team than SIU, including ISU which loses 4 of their top 6 players (Yarbrough, Fayne, Evans, Tinsley).
SIU loses their top 3 players and 5 of the top 7, including starters Armon Fletcher, Sean Lloyd, and Kavion Pippin, plus a part-time starter Marcus Bartley, and subs Thik Bol and Rudy Stradnieks. Plus, it seems likely Barry's staff will probably exit with him, and that includes Anthony Beane, Sr. who has a son on the team- Darius Beane, who would have been one of the top returnees next year.
If Beane leaves, that would mean the loss of 7 of their top 9 players, and around 75% of their team's production.

Barry also has 3 recruits signed for next year, one of which Bradley once had interest in- Chris Payton of Bloomington HS, Evan Taylor of Glenbard West HS, and Lance Jones. a pretty talented guard from Evanston HS. Bradley had offered Chris Payton, and Illinois State had offered all three. I suspect those recruits will ask for their release, and will be hot items on the market this late.

Barry, this is better for you. You needed to get away from SIU fans. That was not a healthy situation. How those ”fans” treated you as you exited the court last night was heartless and toxic.

You will do great whatever you do next.

Barry had 2 teams at Missouri State which got jobbed by the committee. I think one holds the record for best RPI left out of the Tournament. What could have been...

He’s a good guy and I hope he lands on his feet wherever he goes. He would make an outstanding color analyst for Valley broadcasts for sure.
