  • Missouri Valley post-season awards - Drake's Darian DeVries named Coach of the Year

Most of the MVC post-season awards will still depend on the outcomes of the remaining games, and how teams finish.
But I will start the conversation and post my guesses for the major awards.

Player of the Year- If Loyola finishes 1st- Marques Townes, if Drake finishes 1st- Nick McGlynn
Freshman of the Year- A.J. Green, UNI (should be unanimous)
Newcomer of the Year- Tulio Da Silva, Missouri State
Coach of the Year- Darian DeVries, Drake.... but if Missouri State wins the MVC, it will go to Dana Ford
Defensive Player of the Year- Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye -
There is no single player who stands out this year, IMO, but DLO and Sean Lloyd (SIU) are the only 2 members of last year's All Defensive team that returned to play the full season in 2018-19. So I'll go with DLO.

    1st team All MVC-
    Marques Townes
    Nick McGlynn
    Tyreke Key
    Darrell Brown
    Tulio Da Silva

    2nd team-
    Cameron Krutwig
    Armon Fletcher
    A.J. Green
    Milik Yarbrough
    Phil Fayne

not sure if Tyreke Key is gonna get 1st Team over Krutwig. Some think Krutwig should be Player of the Year
I think Loyola swept Drake and Krutwig had a couple decent games head to head against McGlynn.

This year is a bit different than most past years. There are not 5 clear-cut 1st teamers, maybe only 2, Townes and McGlynn. I agree that any one of those I listed on the 2nd team could end up on the 1st team. And there are several other players not listed who could end up on the 2nd team.
Note that I didn't say Krutwig isn't deserving of the 1st team, that is debatable, but I am predicting how the voting will turn out.
I put Krutwig on the 2nd team because IMO, McGlynn and Da Silva are probably more deserving, and because every voter will have Townes on the 1st team, and voters are frequently reluctant to put 2 players from the same team on the 1st team.

Tyreke Key does play for a team with a losing record, but he is the leading scorer in the MVC-

Also, no other guard in the MVC has a better overall FG%, plus he ranks 4th in 3 point %, is top 10 in FT%, and #1 in minutes played.
Maybe it's happened somewhere in the past, but I doubt the top scorer has ever been left off the 1st team All-MVC. If Indiana State had more talent surrounding him, he would be in the conversation for POY.

And btw, both your links supporting Krutwig for POY are from students at Loyola's own student newspaper. Not sure anyone would take that seriously.

Did not Jaylon Brown get left off two years ago?

Good memory. I had forgotten about him. Jaylon Brown of Evansville was the 2017 MVC leading scorer with an average of 20.9 ppg, 5 ppg more than the next highest scorer (Brenton Scott 15.9 ppg). Yet he dropped to the 2nd team All MVC-

That year (2017), the 1st team All MVC had some pretty good talent. Landry Shamet (1st round draft pick), Alize Johnson (another NBA draft pick), Paris Lee (MVC POY), Milton Doyle (another NBA player), and Markis McDuffie (averaging 18.2 ppg in the AAC, and another potential NBA draft pick). I am not sure anyone in the MVC would break into that group of 5.

I think Elijah Childs winning his second Player of the Week award moves him into the conversation for 1st Team or 2nd Team....
..especially if he closes out with two more strong games that BU wins

I think especially if he moves ahead of McGlynn to become the leading rebounder he would be a 2nd teamer on some ballots, and maybe even a candidate for Defensive POY, since there are no clear-cut standouts for the DPOY award this year.

I can't help but feel that a strong end to the season for Childs would open the floodgates for him to make a charge at POY next year. It almost seems like that switch is about to flip. I would imagine the only others in the conversation for preseason POY will be DB, Da Silva, Krutwig, and (possibly) Key.

I would put A.J. Green in that category of POY candidates next year, too.
But, as MikeCash suggested, Tyreke Key may not even be in the MVC next season. If Greg Lansing is fired after the season, as is expected, Key will probably not stay at Indiana State.

Maybe on AJ Green but I am not convinced..
He gets his number on the sheer volume of shots taken...

he leads the league in shots attempted and 3-pointers attempted - and there's only one player on the entire league who is even close to his numbers in both categories.. But he plays point guard and isn't even in the top 20 in assists in the league and has little more than 1/3 the number of assists the league leader has.
And he's not among the leaders in rebounds, steals, etc... Sorry to be skeptical but there's at least a dozen other players who, if they took the volume of shots he takes, would average more in every category.

Here's what's interesting - even tho he is their leading scorer by far...
only TWO of their league wins came when he led them in scoring.
7 of their 9 wins were when he did NOT lead them in scoring - I think that says a whole lot.

so Loyola fans who express their opinion can't be taken seriously..
..but you and a bunch of Bradley fans here on a Bradley message board have every expectation to be taken seriously?

As usual, you change the subject and resort to ad hominem attack. We are all entitled to opinions.
You tried to make the case that Krutwig was a 1st team All MVC and was a Player of the Year candidate because "Some think Krutwig should be Player of the Year". The only 2 links you provided are from the Loyola student newspaper. I cannot find anyone in the world other than those 2 articles written by Loyola students who probably don't even go to the games, who have made such a silly statement. Sure, they are entitled to their opinions, but that hardly supports your case that Krutwig is the POY.
Krutwig is a fine player, but he's not going to win POY. He isn't even the most valuable player on his own team.

you apparently misread - it is not and never was my case, it was the case of the people you said can't be taken seriously
..but I suspect if they read this message board, they'd think some of our opinions can't be taken seriously

I have already gone on record saying who I think is the frontrunner for Player of the Year
                          https://www.bradleyfans.com/forum/sp...-the-year-race
...but that thought was "unless Loyola collapses" - and if they lose their last two games, they could finish as low as 5th or 6th..
                          ..

at this point if Loyola finishes strong & Drake doesn't then the POY would go to Townes
..if Drake is the most impressive down the stretch - then McGlynn
..I suspect most of those who vote for the post-season awards have NOT filled out their ballots yet..

Most years the Valley writers start revealing their selections or even show their entire ballot - but nobody's done it this year

On his radio show today Brian Wardle said the votes for the post-season awards had to be in today
...so with Drake sitting in first with 22 wins and Loyola right there with them - it will be between McGlynn & Townes for Player of the Year

he did predict Nate Kennell to win the Sixth Man Award of the Year
