  • SIU beat writer suggests fire Barry now

"With one year left on his contract and a measly $175,000 buyout after the end of this season, Hinson is on the clock...
A move now could, conceivably, also put the Salukis in a coaching search before anyone else, potentially giving them a leg-up on possible candidates.

...Putting an assistant coach in charge, for example, could give the program the jolt it needs. .."

As I have said before, I do think this is Barry's last year at SIU, unless he survives to the MVC Tournament and makes a deep run or wins it. Then it would become difficult for their AD to make the move. That is why it might be seen as an advantage by their admins to firing him before the season ends. I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen with any loss the rest of the season.
SIU is drawing fewer people for their MVC games than they drew in the non-conference season, and though they report 4,000+ for each game, there are probably only about half that many paid fans there.

I don't know what it is but Barry has a knack for bad luck.... He is an above average coach (in my view)... At Missouri State his best season was 2006 where his team ended with a RPI of 21 and was bypassed by the NCAA tournament - unbelievable. SIU was picked to be 5th and finished 2nd last year and MIssouri State was picked to be 1st and finished 7th last year. I may not know why the SIU fans and Missouri State fans do not like about Barry - it puzzles me but if you review his history - he is well above average in the Missouri Valley and has one heck of a sense of humor. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Hinson https://siusalukis.com/coaches.aspx?rc=594

I would trade Lansing for Barry in a minute. Makes too much sense though. Most AD's not smart enough to get that done.

I like Barry and I think he is a good coach who would really help most mid-majors and low-majors...
But I don't think he will ever get enough talent at SIU to do better than 3-4th place...but then that, as we all know, gets coaches fired in the MVC.

Well Barry and his SIU team sure proved themselves against Bradley on the road today in Peoria. I didn't even watch the game - glad I didn't "waist" my time. The ESPN game cast seems to show that Bradley couldn't even "buy a basket" in the last 4 minute. Figures..... I was going to watch the last 4 minutes on the ESPN3 replay - to see who tried to be hero's and launch a series of 3's that must have missed - but the Bradley SIU game was on CBSSN and no game replays as on ESPN+. I wonder if SIU would consider switching coaches straight up? Well I'm really glad that I didn't "waist" my early Saturday afternoon - and I'll likely cease watching most of the Bradley games for the rest of the season.... Bah-Hum-Bug

The loss was not due to an offensive collapse this time. I actually thought Bradley played well enough to win on offense. But due to an inability to stop SIU because we went with a small 4-guard lineup and benched leading rebounder Koch Bar (8 rebounds, but only 15 minutes played) which allowed SIU to get every rebound down the stretch. Almost all their baskets in the final 5 minutes were 2nd chance points. Bradley still had a chance to tie, but a shot by Luqman Lundy came agonizingly close and rolled off the rim and again we were unable to get a rebound.
I hope you reconsider and watch the remaining games. Right now, Bradley needs all the fan support they can get.
